Fergus County DENTON: A memorial service will be held Friday at the Denton Town Hall for Gerald (Red) Barber who died Friday December 3, after a long illness. Interment will be in the Lewistown Cemetery. The Rev. Ron Kapalka of the Denton Methodist Church will officiate and the Western Start Lodge no. 104 will give the Masonic rites. The casket will not be open. A family and friends dinner will be served in the Town Hall after the services. Barber was one of Denton’s most outstanding citizens. Born June 20, 1919 at the Kierstad place on Wolf Creek that was later absorbed into the Twin Butte Ranch, he was the son of T. O. and Edna Wise Barber. He grew up on the ranch in Bear Springs and attended elementary school in the Twin Butte School. He graduated from Denton High School in 1937. Barber also attended Montana State University for one year. During the depression, he helped build the highways. In 1939, Barber and his brother Robert formed a partnership to farm that lasted until 1973. Whenever there was a community activity or something to be built, Barber was always there. He was a member of the Eagles, the Elks, the Moose Lodge and the Masons, of which he was past master. He was also a charter member of the Denton Lions Club, one of the first persons to join the Montana Grain Growers Association served on the ASCS, the church board and the city council. He helped build the Methodist Church and the swim pool. He married Margaret Harvey in June 0f 1976, who survives him. After his marriage, he ranched in the Arrowcreek Area. Besides his wife, Barber is survived by two sons Jerry Franklin of Houston, TX and Ted Lewis, who’s stationed in the U. S. Navy in Subic Bay, Philippine Islands; a daughter Barbara Ann Snooks of Denton; three step- daughters Roseanna McLees of Miles City and Connie and Barbara Harvey of Billings; seven brotheres, Leonal E., John F., Donald R. and Robert T, all of Denton, Marvin R. of Big Timber, Dr. William D. of Tucson, AZ and Kenneth F. of Woodbine, MD; two sisters, Betty Omanson of Sun Valley, ID and Burnetta Brady of Lewistown; and several nieces and nephews and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one grandson and his parents. Friends wishing to do so may make memorials to the Denton Lions Club or the Denton Ambulance Service. The Cloyd Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
