Some were about his early boyhood in Nebraska where he lived in a sod house. Others stories were about his life as a homesteader in Kalispell, Montana. One of my favorite stories is about the Elk (photo above) he shot in 1907, It was a Montana record at the time and hung in a Kalispell bank until someone stole it. He told me about his Grand Father, who lost his leg in the civil war and his Father who was an early homesteader in Idaho. His father had been a cowboy in Nebraska during the 1870's. Grand Dad was a "stump rancher" in Montana, where he made his living with a team of Belgium Horses. He used the team to haul lumber, firewood, water, ice, and to bail hay. My favorite story that Grand Dad told was about the time he and his brother were hunting in Montana. Grand Dad was in a small meadow surrounded by thick lodgepole pines. He thought he was shooting at the same running deer until the action was over and he discovered he had actually shot seven deer . Grand Dad met my Grand Ma while she was picking Huckleberries near her family homestead in Kalispell, Montana. I still have one one Grand Ma's report cards from Cayuse Prairie School in Blaine County, Montana. Grand Dad told me about joining the Montana Militia about 1914 and about the 4th of July that his sister Meda wore the "Stars and Stripes". My mother, Velma, was born in Kalispell, Montana, in 1914. My Mom took me on lots of trips back to the family homestead in Montana. My Mom's uncle, Lon, gave me a horse to ride on one of those visits and I've been in love with horses since that day.
