Virginia Hayen, an elderly Mesa resident, died at Val Vista Drive and Main Street after the car she was riding in collided with a van about 3:40 p.m., Mesa police Sgt. Earle Lloyd said. The car's driver, Lucille Nuttall, 81, was flown to Scottsdale Memorial Hospital-Osborn, where she was in fair condition, a hospital spokeswoman said. Hall had been driving south on Val Vista behind Nuttall's Plymouth Reliant before it collided with a Dodge Ram van. The van, used to transport children for Tots Unlimited, a preschool and day care center, was traveling north when the Reliant turned east in front of it, Lloyd said. Van driver Robin Regan, 26, of Mesa and two boys, ages 6 and 7, who were riding in the van were not injured. The accident is under investigation, Lloyd said. Hall's truck was clipped as the van and car spun out of control after the impact. +ACI-I jumped out and tried to help the ladies. It was so traumatic.
