Marian and Ole Dahl moved into a new (1920's) log house that had been built as a "speakeasy" on main street, and installed an electric light plant, the first in Garnet, Montana. Mr. Dahl ran a little white saloon called "the joint" or "Shortys" in Garnet, Montana during prohibition. The Dahls made their own home brew beer and had a man cap the bottles. One day it was too warm and the bottle tops popped off. They had to drink all the beer before it went bad. About 1938 he opened the new saloon at the same site as Charlie Davis' old saloon. When drinks became legal again the new saloon became popular. Mrs. Dahl, who kept a watchful eye on the town in the summers, also stopped vandalism and stealing. One day Mrs. Dahl caught a California man tying on one of the ornamental Hotel doors on the top of his car. She swore and threatened to shoot him, but he drove away in a cloud of dust with the door. Police only laughed when she wanted them to trace the license number. Marian Dahl lived in Garnet as late as the 1960's. Bibliography: Hammond, Helen 1983.
