CHARLES (CHARLEY) LEWIS Born: Place: Died: Place: Occupation: he operated the Garnet Stage Line twice a day from Bearmouth to Garnet, Montana in 1898. Married: Children: 1) Ester Lewis (Bonham) Born: Place: Died: Place: Married: she married Mr. Bonham. He owned a large barn in Garnet. The barn was a tall building with a loft that was entered from an outside stairway. It was built of logs and roofed with horizontal boards. In summer odors from the barn was noticeable to nearby residence located down wind. Ester Lewis came to Garnet when she was five years old. Her Uncle was Phil Newman who had a sawmill on Anderson Hill near Garnet. Lewis decedents are still mining claims near Garnet. On one trip with his stage line several ladies and Dr. Mussigbrod were passengers, the stage went off the China grade and slid top down for more than 20 feet before coming to a stop. Luckily the passengers escaped injury. He ran an advertizement in the Garnet Miner News which reads, "GARNET STAGE LINE, from Garnet to Bearmouth, connections with all trains, Charles Lewis, Proprietor."
