PETER "PETE" McDERMOTT Born: Place: Died: Place: Occupation: he owned and operated the Grant-Harfort Mine at Garnet, Montana in 1898. Married: Children: He lived at the Shamrock Mining Claim at Garnet. The Garnet Mining News article reads, "Pete McDermott cam on Tuesday's noon stage." This same issue gives a brief history of the celebrated Shamrock Case concerning the ownership of the Grant-Hartford Tunnel under bond and lease. This was a landmark case of mine ownership at Garnet, Montana in 1898. Peter McDermontt owned numerous mining claims in Garnet including the "Old Northwest" later renamed the "Shamrock". He forgot to complete the $100.00 assessment needed to hold the claim from other miners. It then reverted back to the United States. Four days later it was staked by Teddy Brogan and named the "International". It was then sold back to Pete McDermott who renamed it the "Shamrock". He then sold the claim to his son, John Patten and Ed Lannen for $10,000.00 recieving an I.O.U. The "Shamrock" claim was contriversial and lead to lawsuits from various parties. Mr. McDermott was represented by Durfee and Brown of Philipsburg with Judge McConnell of Helena residing. The jury found McDermontt legal owner because the claim was officially abandon when it was staked by Mr. Teddy Brogan. This decision reduced the old method of shooting claim jumpers and most miners settled disputes in court. Bibliography: Garnet Mining News, 1898. Article, December 8, Volume 1, No. 10, page 1.
