They first went to California, then found their way to Colorado. By 1888-89 they located in Montana, where they staked out a claim. The property they selected was three miles from Clinton, and southeast of Missoula. They worked as miners and mine agents for the Anaconda Mine. The little spare time they had was spent building a log cabin, out buildings and establishing a "ranch". William returned to Cornwall, England and married Susanna in 1891. William and Susanna returned to Montana where she kept house for him and his brothers. When Susanna became pregnant, William decided she should go up to Garnet, so that she might be near Mrs. Page (midwife) when the time arrived. On a cold and snowy day in November, William hitched up his sturdy team of horses to the cart, and up the mountain they went to Mrs. Pages' cabin. It was a good decision, as the winter was severe. Ethel was born safely, and it was April 1893 before the roads were passable enough to return to the Morcom ranch. Life was hard for the Morcom's. It was hard to get use to the cold, and all the hard work, after living in the milder climate of Cornwall, England. Susanna looked forward to the Indians passing by, and often traded them a hot dinner for cutting firewood or bringing her water from the pump. They returned to Cornwall, England where daughter Violet was born. In 1912 they again returned to the United States and settled at Ironwood, Michigan.
