THE SAMPLES FAMILY Born: Place: Died: Place: Occupation: Mr. Samples was a carpenter making studs and lagging that were used by miners to support the sides of the mine area where they were mining. Married: Children: 1) Hugh Samples Born: Place: Died: Place: 2) Orpha Samples Born: Place: Died: Place: Hugh Samples was ten when his family moved to Garnet. They stayed but two years living in an area above the Nancy Hanks mine called "stump town" because one year the trees were cut off at the level above the snow. Sammy Ritchey and Normanand Sigland (a blond Norwegian boy) became a close friends of the Samples children. As Helene, Sam's sister remarked, "It was always Me and Hugh and Normanad". They formed an nearly inseparable trio and roamed the hills around Garnet and went to Warren Park on picnics. Hugh Samples was very musical and played the fiddle at the dances held in the Garnet Miners Union Hall. He has won many awards and trophies in fiddle contests. He played in Washington D.C. in July 1976 for our Nation's 200th birthday at the American Folklore Festival. Both legs have been amputated just below the knees, but he continued to travel to fiddler contests and to win prizes. Bibliography: Hammond, Helen 1990. Garnet Was Their Home, unknown publisher.
