Berendes, Jefferson City, was born at Niles, Mich., November 17, 1861, and is a son of Frank and Nettie (Dell) Berendes. His earlier days were spent in attendance at school and assisting a cousin in a grocery store.. In April, 1879, he came to Jefferson City, M. T., and worked in a butcher shop eighteen months. He then engaged as clerk in a general store for J. G. Sanders, and afterward for Mr. Wickes, at Wicke's mining camp, until September, 1881, when he bought an interest in the store with Mr. Ellis, with whom he is still a partner in business.
