Brooke, farmer and stock grower, Whitehall, was born in 1819. He came to Montana among the pioneers and took a full part in all the enterprises which marked the beginnings of American settlement in the territory. Incidents of his life from 1865, when he made the journey from Butte City to Fort Benton in charge of an ox team, to the present day, have been carefully noted by him; but, as the greater number of such incidents are referred to in the pages of the general and county histories, they are not incorporated in this sketch. In March, 1866, he started down the Yellowstone, but was forced to retreat by the Sioux. His experiences of the previous year, for he was then captured by the northern Indians, led him to the conclusion that it was much wiser to retreat than to fall into the hands of the Sioux.
