IRVIN COLLIER - pg 1175 From Leeson's History of Montana 1739-1885 published in 1885 SURNAMES FOUND IN THIS BIOGRAPHY: MILLS Irvin Collier, P. O. Beaver Creek, is a native of Clay Co., Ky., where he was born August 28, 1830. His father was a farmer and speculator by occupation. Mr. Collier left Kentucky in 1843 or '44 and traveled through Illinois to Iowa, remaining in the latter State about eighteen months, working on a farm not far from Winterset. From there he went to Nebraska, and on to Missouri and Kansas, only stopping for a short time in these states. From Kansas he went to Memphis, Tenn., returning again to Nebraska, and from there going to Indiana. In Indiana he fitted out and went to Denver, Col, in 1859, and was there most of the time until 1864, working in the mines, prospecting and freighting. In 1863 he started back to the States, but was pressed into service by the Union forces and taken to Vicksburg. he returned to Denver in the spring of 1864, and thence came to Alder Gulch, which he reached on the 28th of August of that year. He was at Alder Gulch a portion of two winters, freighting during the summer and working about the mines, hauling timber, etc. From alder Gulch went to Last Chance Gulch in 1866, where he mined awhile, and has been about Helena more or less since. In 1862 he took up 160 acres of land on the Missouri river, upon which he now resides. Mr. collier was married to Miss Alice Mills, a native to Utah, March 7, 1871, and is the father of seven children: David, Andrew Irvin, James Edwards, John, Warren Word, Thomas Franklin and Charles.
