Mrs. Carpenter is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Ryan, pioneer residents of the Boulder Valley. The newlyweds made their home on a ranch at Logan, Montana. Nellie and Eddie Ryan were on their way to Logan to visit at the Carpentar ranch when they were drowned in the slough. Mary Ryan Carpenter was the first white child born in the Boulder Valley. Her birthdate is April 10, 1867. She was educated at St. Vincent's Academy in Helena. Mary and Will raised six children: Edward, Emma, Irene, George, Francis and Agnes. When the children were growing up they had an orchestra. Aunt Mary played the organ or piano. Each child played an instrument and Uncle Will played the fiddle. They were very much in demand at parties and dances. At the present time, Emma, Agnes, and George are alive and well and living in Calfiornia. SUBMITTED BY MRS. MARIE PARADIS SWARTZ
