DOUGLAS - DOHERTY - WALLGREEN On Christmas Day, 1861, Calista Allen, of Ohio and George Augustus Douglas, of New York, were married in Wyoming, Nebraska. They remained there for the birth of their first daughter, Mary, a year later, and then moved on by covered wagon to Virginia City, Madison County, Montana, for their second daughter s birth in January 1865, named Clara Montana. She was the first white child born in the Territory of Montana. Their next move was to Jefferson County where they homesteaded and built a home where the Whitetail road and the old Hot Springs road intersect in the big willows. There they remained the rest of their lives and Elmer, Arthur, George, Jr., John and Pearl were born. They lived to celebrate their Golden Anniversary on Christmas 1911. The following July, George A. passed away at the age of 81. Calista lived on until February, 1920. Margaret Campbell was married in Ireland to John Doherty in October 1872. They crossed the Atlantic in a sail boat. I remember her saying that they came up the Missouri River in a steamboat to Fort Benton; probably by covered wagon to Boulder and down the Boulder Valley to Cold Springs to about a mile south of the Post Office where they built a log house. Children born were Robert, Nellie, John, William, Connie, Elizabeth, and Hugh. When Hugh was six months old his father died in 1887. In March, 1888, Margaret was married to Jonas Wallgreen and their children were Margaret and Phemia. Jonas passed away July, 1901. Margaret lived until May, 1929. Margaret Aveline Wallgreen was married to John Franklin Douglas on Christmas Day 1907, in Whitehall, Montana. They first lived on the Robinson Ranch on the Milk River near Havre, Montana, and from there on ranches in Jefferson and Madison Counties. Children born to them were Grace, Arthur, Edith and Clara May. Margaret was killed in a car accident in February 1925, near Jefferson Island, Montana. John moved to California in 1936 and lived until November 1948. Margaret Aveline Wallgreen was born two days after Montana became a state on November 8, 1889. Her birthday was November 10. Grace Douglas was married to John Meagher in June 1938, and has lived in Butte since 1925. She was an automotive parts clerk their for forty years, a position brought about by Howard Pierce, dealer in Franklin, Pierce Arrow and Hupmobile cars. She retired in 1973 after 23 years at Safeway Garage in the parts room. Her husband, John, was a chauffeur 45 years with the Anaconda Company and retired in 1966. Their children are Margaret, who is secretary to Evel Knievel and Rosemary Thurston, who is a registered nurse at Virginia Mason Hospital in Seattle. Rosemary's husband Douglas Thurston, is a parts man for Mercedes Benz dealer in Seattle. Their children are David and Christine. Arthur Douglas was married to Florence McIsaac in Butte in September 1938. They moved to California where he entered the army in 1943. He was stationed in England and France until being killed in Action in Luxenborg in September, 1944. She passed away in California in October 1975. Edith Douglas was married to Lester Shanholtzer in November 1948. They have a ranch at Milligan Canyon. Their daughter, Sharon is married to Roy Buckallew and they live at Milligan Canyon. They have an infant daughter, Rhonda. Leroy works at the Talc Plant in Three Forks. Lester passed away in June, 1975 and Edith remains at the ranch. Clara May Douglas was married to Leslie Buzz Shaw in June, 1935. They ranched at Jefferson Island until 1960 when they became attendants at Warm Springs. He retired in 1968 and they now live in Butte. She is still working at Warm Springs as an attendant. Their children are Janet Powley, Douglas Shaw, and Patricia Clark. Janet is a registered nurse at St. James's Community Hospital and is married to Harry Powley, parts manager for Roberts Rocky Mountain Equipment. Their children are Steven, RaeLynn, Mark and Karen. Douglas Shaw operates the family ranch at Jefferson Island. He is married to Areylle Jackson of Whitehall. The children are Shane, Kelly, Blake, Julianne and Paul.
