HALL - pg 1182 From Leeson's History of Montana 1739-1885 published 1885 SURNAMES FOUND IN THIS BIOGRAPHY: HARTER; HARRIS John J. Hall, Jefferson City, son of Thomas J. and Julia M. (Harris) Hall, was born at Dover, Windham Co., Vt., March 4, 1830, where he remained on a farm with his parents until 1856, at which time he went to La Crosse, Wis., and was there engaged until 1857 as engineer in a saw mill. He then went to Mankato, Minn., and took charge of a stationary engine until 1858, when he made a trip to Washington Territory and was driven out by the Indians. He then located at Walla Walla, going from there to Colville, where he remained until the spring of 1861; then went to Hell's Gate on the Missouri River; thence to Bitter root valley, where he passed the winter, and in the spring of 1862 to Deer Lodge, Mont., prospecting through the country to Big Hole diggings, where he heard of the Bannack mines, and immediately went there and passed the winter. with the first stampede he moved into Alder Gulch where he remained until the winter of 1863-64, and then engaged in freighting in Utah. In 1865 he came to the Pipestone and took up a ranch, and in 1866 took up another near Jefferson City. In 1869 he bought stock in Utah and brought it to his ranch on the Pipestone, where he remained until 1877, when he again came upon his ranch at Jefferson City. Mr. Hall was married at Montana City on the 27th of August, 1865, to Miss Nancy Harter. He was appointed assessor of the first district of Jefferson county during 1874 and 1875, and has been one of the school trustees in his district for several years.
