HILL - pg 1182 From Leeson's History of Montana 1739-1885 published 1885 SURNAMES FOUND IN THIS BIOGRAPHY: CROSS; SCRIBNER; WAKEFIELD H. M. Hill, Clancy, was born at Westport, Fairfield Co., Conn., August 31, 1833. His parents were Nathaniel L. and Mariah (Wakefield) Hill. He first left home in 1849, going to Fond du Lac, Wis., where he soon became a successful contractor and builder and was engaged in such business until 1859, when he made a visit to his parents in Connecticut. He soon returned to Wisconsin and went into the produce and commission business, at which he remained until 1861, when he enlisted for three months, and served as Sergeant in Company A, First Wisconsin Volunteers. After being discharged he with a friend bought the Northwestern Type Foundry at Milwaukee, at which business he remained until April 1864, when the western fever having asserted its power over him, he migrated to the then noted Montana City, where he engaged in mining and dealing in merchandise until 1872, when he moved his business to Clancy. The post office was also moved to the latter place, and as he had been postmaster at Montana City and performed the duties of the office in a satisfactory manner, he was again appointed postmaster at Clancy. Mr. Hill being of an active and mechanical turn of mind, has connected with his store a workshop and assay office, where he passes many pleasant hours in the production of such articles as his taste and wants dictate. Mr. Hill is also a Notary Public, having filed that office since the Territory was first organized. He also made the first assessment in the county and acted as first Sheriff. Mr. Hill has twice been married, first to Miss lucia Scribner, at Rosindale, Fond du Lac Co, Wis., in 1852, she dying in 1858 and leaving two children. he married Miss Julia M. Cross at Woodbury, Ohio, November 3, 1860, and they have one daughter, Miss Ida May.
