Quaintance came to Boulder Valley in the fall of 1866 where he commenced farming and stock raising. The first winter he slept in a beef pen because winter set in before he could cut the logs to build a house. In 1871, he married Sara Tindall, a native of Illinois. They had two children William, who died then he was eight years old, and Gussie. Mrs. Quaintance died in 1875, and in the spring of 1879 he married Alice Tindall. They had four children, Roy, Bessie, A. C. (Cary), and William. During this period, he purchased the Boulder Hot Springs, built a hotel and greatly improved the place. He also built the Windsor Hotel and the rest of the buildings to where the Shop Rite Market is. William is the only one living and he lives in Long Beach, California. Mr. Quaintance died in 1925, and Mrs. Quaintance died in Long Beach, California, where she had resided with Bessie until her death in 1948. David W. and Ida Middlemas came to Boulder Valley in 1902 from Helena and bought the ranch where the Paul Smiths live. They had three children, George, Edith and May. Edith and George worked the ranch for sometime, then went back to Helena. Edith married C. O. Murray and moved to Boulder. Cary Quaintance married May Middlemas in 1913 and lived on the Quaintance ranch until it was sold to Ed Kyler in 1964. They then moved to Boulder. They had three children, Laura, Doris and William. Laura lives in Great Falls and Doris in Walla Walla, Washington. William was a B17 Bomber pilot in World War II. He was killed over Cologne, Germany, on February 22, 1944.
