SHERLOCK - pg 1185 From Leeson's History of Montana 1739-1885 published 1885 SURNAMES FOUND IN THE BIOGRAPHY: PURCELL J. w. Sherlock, deceased, was born in Cork co, Ireland, being the second son in a numerous family. His father was a prominent lawyer of Cork Co., and solicitor also in Dublin and Cork cities. His name was Thomas Sherlock. Mrs. Sherlock, the mother of John was a remarkable woman and could speak seven different languages. Mr. Sherlock received his education at Trinity College, Dublin, studying for two professions, ministry and medicine, but chose a farmer's life. He left Ireland in 1858, and after four months' sailing by way of Cape Horn arrived in new Zealand. He then engaged in farming, also took a prominent part in politics. Was justice of the peace, and in the absence of a clergyman was Lay Reader. Leaving New Zealand in 1872 he came to California and settled in Big Valley, where he lived for about three years engaged in raising sheep. Losing his band of sheep by the cold winter, he bought a few more and went to Shasta Co., and in 1880 came to Crow Creek valley, Montana, where he sold the sheep and bought a ranch of 480 acres, upon which his family now resides. He was taken sick with pneumonia in the same year, and after about a week's illness died July 18, 1880. Mrs. Sherlock, wife of John W. Sherlock, was formerly Miss Ann Purcell, a distant connection of the late Archbishop Purcell, of Cincinnati. She was married to Mr. Sherlock at Lismore, Ireland, in 1856. The family consists of 10 children, Jonathan W., being the eldest.
