DATA BASE OF THE VITAL STATISTICS IN THE BOULDER/BASIN NEWSPAPERS THIS DATA BASE CONTAINS: Deaths 7694 Marriages 4420 Births 3167 Divorces 954 Engagements 191 Citizenship 277 Christening 89 Adoptions 26 Name Changes 8 TOTAL 16826 OTHER INDEX: This index consists of names in the comment section which cannot be sorted in the data base and also brides which were listed in a marriage or in husbands obit. These are indicated with (B) following name. Following is a description of each of the categories in the data base: NAME: If event is a marriage I have listed groom's surname first and bride's surname second. If a divorce I have only listed the surname once. AGE: INF = Infant; CH = Child TYPE: D = Died; E = Engagement; B = Born; CZ = Citizenship; DV = Divorce; M = Marriage; A = Adopted; C = Christened/baptized. B/D: Birthdate M/D: Date of Marriage RES: Name of town that person resides in VET: If obit lists person as a veteran this will have "Yes" FNAME: Father's name (used mainly for births) but also maiden names of women when listed in their death notices or in divorces. MNAME: Mother's name (will have maiden name if listed) GROOM: Full name of groom and name of husband in obit and in divorce BRIDE: Full name of bride and name of wife in obit and in divorce GR PAR: Groom's parents BR PAR: Bride's parents PAPER: Name of newspaper -If no name listed then it was the Monitor MARR AT: Married at. Will list name of town and/or state person married in. Also note that some marriages will be printed in the comments section. LIC ISS: this indicates that the paper said that a marriage license was bought but not that they were married. Probably 99% of these cases the people got married but I have listed it as "LIC ISS" because there could be a chance they never married or they married at a much later date. COMMENTS: This section will have different items listed. EXAMPLES ARE: Birthplace (I have tried to always list the birthplace first in this section); survivors in a death (these quite often will have only the last name); when person came to United States (will say: U.S. 1888). In some cases because of lack of room I may have entered a second wife, second husband or other information in an area not usually used for that information so you will have to read the information carefully. ABBREVIATIONS I HAVE USED: BLDR=BOULDER; BSN=BASIN; HLN=HELENA; CRBN=CORBIN; B/P=BIRTHPLACE; FRMR=FORMER; 2 ART= THERE ARE TWO ARTICLES IN THIS ISSUE; 2ND ART: (DATE)= THERE IS ANOTHER ARTICLE IN PAPER OF THAT DATE. I have abstracted 104 years (1885 through 1989) of deaths, births, marriages, citizenship, divorces, engagements, christening, name changes by the court and adoptions. I did not abstract all of the vitals from the East Helena News section because these also could be found in the Helena Independent paper. I did this to provide you with a tool to use in your research. Only major information from the newspaper item has been abstracted. In most cases there is more information in the article than what is listed in my data base (example: survivors listed in an obit. PLEASE NOTE: I only listed survivors if they had a different last name than the person who died. At the beginning of the project I did not list survivors if they lived out of the area). Some of the early deaths were not actually obits but just a news item by the editor. Some of the early information is from "36 - 25 Year Ago columns" which I have noted in the comment section. BOULDER NEWSPAPER HISTORY: The Jefferson County Enterprise started 5/30/1885 - There were 3 issues then the man left with everyones money. The Sentinel started 8/14/1885 and went through 12/31/1904. I have abstracted all of the AGE except for the following papers which I have not found: The Age and Sentinel combined 01/01/1905 with the last one that I found being 06/03/1909 (excepting none from 10/04/1907 until 01/09/1908). The first Boulder Monitor is 09/14/1907 and still continues. BASIN PAPERS HISTORY: The first issue of the Basin Times is 02/10/1894 and the last issue of that paper is 4/25/1896 when it moved to Butte. First issue of Basin progress is 5/22/1897 and it goes until 01/30/1909.
