Lewis and Clark County MONTANA UNIVERSITY The University opened for the first term on September 1890 with forty-four enrolled students. The Rev. R.E. Smith secured 235 acres of valuable land for $15,000. The building, situated on the electric road near Helena, had the foundation of stone of its fine college laid in 1889. In 1890 the building was completed. It is 110' x 140', has five stories including a basement and an attic and is furnished throughout. The culinary department and heating apparatus are in the basement, reception and assembly rooms are on the first floor, and students are housed on the floors above. A supply of excellent water is abundant and three bathrooms, on different floors, are furnished with hot and cold water. The ladies apartments are entirely separate from those of the gentlemen. Young ladies and gentlemen meet in the recitation room, dining hall and at socials in which the professors participate. The whole building is heated by hot water. The walls are of brick and granite and the building as a whole is a most substantial and beautiful piece of architecture. The electric railroad stops at University Place. Trustees: Wilber F.
