Joseph Solomon, one of Missoula's most successful businessmen is a native of Germany and a descendant of German ancestry, his birth having occurred January 8, 1849. In 1865 when a boy in his 'teens, he emigrated to America, landing in New York, a stranger and now knowing a word of the language. From New York he went to San Francisco by way of the Isthmus of Panama, arriving at that city in 1866 and soon after his arrival there accepting the position of traveling agent for Bonner Brother, of San Francisco. Later he traveled for Strauss, Heller and Company. In this business he continued for twelve, traveling all over the west, including California, Oregon, Washington, Montana andNew Mexico, thus gaining an extensive acquaintance with the business men of these states.In 1878 Mr. Solomon selected Missoula Montana as the best point in which to start a business for himself, and he accordingly opened a general merchandise store here in which he did a large and successful business for five years. He then sold out and invested his means in city property, and now he is one of the largest real estate owners in Missoula. He owns seven residences and eight business buildings, besides large number of city lots and suburban property.Mr. Solomon was married in 1891 to Miss T. Selieg of San Francisco, daughter of Moses Seleig, a prominent businessman of that city.
