Idaho World January 6, 1870
 The people of Montana Territory are in a fever of excitement over the 
reported discovery of very rich and extensive diggings on Cedar Creek in that 
territory. We learned from the New Northwest of December 17th that the town of 
Missoula, in that territory, is almost depopulated in consequence of the rush 
for the new mines. The place where the new discovery has been made is about 40 
miles from Moose Creek ferry in Missoula county.The creek is about twenty five 
miles long and heads in the Coeur d'Alene mountains. In one letter written by 
a Mr. Robert Kelly, and which is published in the Northwest, the writer says 
he only saw two pans of dirt washed which prospected 87 cents to the two pans, 
but he says that others have prospected with better results. One man named 
Tipton got $9 75 to five pans, another man named Jim Lawler got $2 78 out of 
one pan of dirt, and the discoverers had panned out $300. Another writer says 
he saw $14 washed from five pans of dirt on claim No.38 below the discovery. 
The main stream is called Cedar creek, into which put numerous side gulches. A 
town called Louisville has been located and another one was being laid out. If 
the accounts we derive from the Deer Lodge papers are reliable, the new 
diggings must be quite as rich and extensive as any that have heretofore been 
found in Montana. The new camp is abot 160 miles from Deer Lodge, and many 
living there, who have been considering the trip, have determined to await 
further news. The papers advise persons who intends to start to "go well clad, 
blanketed and pursed"
