Spencer had entered one of the empty cars of a freight train about to depart for Spokane. As a helper engine was being cut into the train for the grade west, the head engine backed the forward half of the train into the helper engine, completely demolishing the end car, in which Specer was riding. Spencer was badly cut and mangled, dying instantly. Little other damage was caused by the wreck. Spencer had a poll tax receipt on his person, issued in Humboldt County, Nevada, on September 1; also an employment agency's recepit, issued in BUtte.
