Anaconda Standard, December 9, 1905
Hamilton, Dec. 8 -- James H. Cowan, one of the wealthiest farmers in the Bitter 
Root valley, died at 3 o'clock this morning after an illness from cancer of 
about six months. Mr. Cowan was one of the first settlers of the valley, coming 
here about 40 years ago and locating at Corvallis. He was 76 years of age. He 
leaves a widow, but no children. The funeral will be held next Sunday at 
Corvallis.
