Johnston, which took place in the city early yesterday morning. The subject of the sketch was born in Canada in the 1840 and was therefore at the time of his death 41 years of age. With the exception of his two brothers who are living about sixty miles below Missoula, all of his relations reside in Canada. The deceased came to Montana at an early day where he has since, with the exception of a few years, followed the occupation of mining. About four years ago he purchased an interest the the "MINER" and assumed editorial charge of the paper. As a writer he was clear, forcible and logical, and through the exercise of those qualities combined with superior judgment, he soon brought the "MINER" to the front rank of journalism. As a friend he was steadfast and true and the warm grasp of his hand but disclosed the warmer feeling of his heart. As a man he was courageous, noble, generous and frank, and being actuated by the highest and purest of motives, he had nothing to conceal from friend or foe. A student by nature, his leisure hours were devoted to the mastering of the dead and the modern languages, while the abstruse sciences commanded his deep and earnest attention. None knew him but to love him and his closest friends were those who knew him best. In his death the world loses one of Nature's noblemen the Territory a prominent citizen: society an honorable gentleman and his friends a loved companion. Peace to his ashes.
