Van Orton. L[ee] Van Orton, an old-time resident of Butte, died in Chicago yesterday [October 17], after a long and lingering illness. Mr. Orton, or “Van,” as he was familiarly known, came to Butte in 1877, and, being a gifted musician of more than ordinary merit and proficiency, became prominently identified with the musical fraternity. He was an active officer of the Musicians union, and his valuable services were recognized in his being made an honorary member when sickness overtook him. He was the leader of Orton’s band and orchestra and engaged in the music business until 1896 [?] when on account of illness, he went to a hospital in Chicago [Cook County Insane Asylum] for treatment. There he was a suffering patient to the time of his death. “Van” came to Montana in 1861 with his parents. He located in Virginia City, and, with his genial, sunny disposition, open-hearted frankness, and social qualifications, he endeared himself to all with whom he came in contact. His death is deeply deplored by the old-timers of the state, who knew him only to love him, whose sympathy goes out spontaneously to his surviving brothers William C., Walter S., James M. of the firm of Orton Bros, Fred L. and Alfred W., all of Butte. Arrangements have been made to have the remains brought to Butte for interment [in Mount Moriah Cemetery] by the side of his father, mother, sister, wife and child. Notice of the funeral will be published later.” END October 21, 1901 (Monday) "The remains of L. Van Orton arrived last night [October 20] from Chicago. The funeral will take place to-day [October 21] at 2 p.m. from the residence of his brother W[illiam] C[lark] Orton, No. 801 W. Copper street."
