Stillwater Cemetery submitted by June Mandeville, junbugforr@aol.com From Vol. II, page 14, They Gazed on the Beartooths by Jim Annin, 1964 - "Columbus Has Had Many Cemeteries - Like many frontier stations, Columbus has had several cemeteries. The first recorded burial was a stagecoach driver near Sheep Dip. When Stillwater was established, a small burial plat was selected about half a mile north of the courthouse, and contained ten graves when it was abandoned in favor of a new site on the north side of the hill from which sandstone was obtained for the quarry operation. It was here that the first Memorial Day service was held at the turn of the century When Mountain View Cemetery was developed west of town, all the bodies whose identity was known, were moved to the new burial ground, but a good many unknowns remain where they were originally interred." STILLWATER CEMETERY 1/2 mile north of Columbus, Montana Only one stone remains and was replaced as the old on deteriorated.
