Complete obituaries and marriages may be abstrated with a note indicating there is a full story (FS) and page number following. +++ 12 Jan. 1901 Marriage Wednesday morning at eight o'clock occured the marriage of Miss Helen P. VanCleve, eldest daughter of Hon. and Mrs. Paul VanCleve of Melville, and Mr. John L. Scarlett of England. The ceremony occured at "The Ranch," and was performed by Rev. Piernat of Livingston. (FS p. 1) Death Killed on the Track Shortly after dark last Saturday evening C.D. and Moreland Fell came into town from the section house four miles west with the news that William Houghton, section foreman had been killed at the water tank by west bound freight train No. 57. The funeral occured from the Congregational church Monday afternoon, the services being conducted by Rev. Jos. Pope. He left a wife. (FS p. 1) +++ 26 Jan. 1901 Death On Sunday last this community learned with deep regret of the death of George Sanderson, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Sanderson which occured at the home of his parents on the previous night. He was born in Minnesota Dec. 22, 1881. His remains were interred in the Bigtimber cemetery, the funeral services being conducted from the Congregational church. (FS p. 1) +++ 2 Feb. 1901 Divorce May M. Davis against M.R. Davis, divorce. (Page 4) Death Hattie, the 12-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. T.G. Shipton was stricken with scarlet fever about two weeks ago and died last Wednesday. The burial occurred from the Shipton residence Thursday morning. At the grave the last funeral rites were performed by Rev. Jos. Pope of the Congregational church. (Page 4) +++ 9 Feb. 1901 Divorce The case of May Davis against M.R. Davis was heard last Monday, and a decree of divorce, including custody of children, was granted to the plaintiff. (Page 4) +++ 23 Feb. 1901 Birth A boy was initiated in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Warton last Wednesday night. (Page 4) Birth A son was born to Mrs. Chas. Hathaway Thursday night. (Page 4) Marriage The residence of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Bade, in the Town of Lake (Minn.), was the scene of a pretty home wedding on Friday afternoon, February 8th, at which time their daughter, Miss Augusta M. Bade, was united in marriage to Mr. James W. Warner, of Big Timber, Montana. Rev. Wm. Granzmanns, the new paster of the German Lutheran church, of this city, read the service. (FS p. 4) Death Lillie, the nine-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Gottlob of Howie, died of diptheria Thursday morning. It is the only case of the disease that has been reported in the county this winter. The remains were brought to Bigtimber and interred in the local cemetery yesterday afternoon. The burial service was read by Rev. Jos. Pope. (Page 4) +++ 2 Mar. 1901 Marriage Mr. Pope returned from Nye yesterday where he performed the marriage ceremony of Solemon J. Craft and Miss Effie Lyons last Wednesday evening. (FS p. 3) +++ 9 Mar. 1901 Birth A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Gates last Friday. (Page 3) Marriage Last Monday a marriage license was issued to Mr. Fred Thompson of Greycliff and Miss Nettie Weaver of Wormer (sic). (Page 3) Marriage In Billings last week Wednesday, Mr. J.C. Tintinger of Absarokee and Miss Sidney Hinton of Whittemore, Iowa, were united in marriage by Rev. W.D. Clark. Mr. Tintinger is one of the prominent and successful ranchers of this county and is well known everywhere. (Page 3) +++ 16 Mar. 1901 Birth Bigtimber Pioneer - "Born, this morning to Mr. and Mrs. J.E. Sheridan, a daughter. This is a genuine scoop, Hannah." (Page 3) +++ 6 Apr. 1901 Birth A girl was born to Mr. and Mrs. J.H. Whiting of Bridger creek last week. (Page 1) Marriage Clarence Maxwell and Leota Watson, both of Red Lodge, were united in marriage by justice Pound at the Blakeslee Hotel Thursday afternoon. (Page 1) Marriage Gilbert H. Howard and Mrs. Amelia Aartlett, both of Bigtimber, were married last Sunday afternoon at the home of Mr. and Mrs. W.J. Hannah by Rev. Jos. Pope of the Congregational church. (FS p. 1) +++ 13 Apr. 1901 Birth A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Gugler last Monday. (Page 1) Marriage A marriage license was issued Saturday to John Meadoys of Bigtimber and Barbara McGuire of Lake Superior, Wis. The marriage was performed at 9 o'clock Easter Sunday by Father Piernat of St. Marys church. The young people will make their home in Big Timber. - Post (Page 1) +++ 27 Apr. 1901 Birth Born to Mrs. and Mr. A.M. Dodge last Monday, a son. (Page 5) Death Wednesday afternoon, Maurice, the little two-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. A. Whitney died of pneumonia at the home of his parents of this place. The child had been ill but a few days. The funeral services occurred from the Whitney residence Friday afternoon, being conducted by Jos. Pope of the Congregational Church. A large number of friends of the family were present to mingle their tears with the sorrowing parents. (Page 1) Death Last Saturday evening Miss Mary Ewing, who occupied a room at the Anderson residence on First Avenue, was stricken with paralysis. Medical aid was summoned at once, but the young woman died in a very short time. Miss Ewing came to Bigtimber about two years ago from her home in Scotland, since when she has followed the profession of trained nurse. So far as is known, she has no relatives in this country. The remains were interred from St. Marks church Monday. (Page 1) +++ 11 May 1901 Death The little foster child of Mr. and Mrs. F.H. Baker died quite suddenly at their home last Friday evening. It was buried Sunday. (Page 3) +++ 18 May 1901 Birth Born, to Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Pound, Thursday, a daughter. (Page 3) Birth A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Henry Wullum on the Lower Sweetgrass last Wednesday. (Page 3) Marriage Rev. William G. Forbis of this place and Mrs. Rosa Crouse Blankenship of Bozeman were united in marriage at Bozeman by Rev. S.B. Tabor of the Methodist church last Wednesday afternoon. (FS p. 1) Marriage On the 8th of May, at the home of J.A. Muir of Bigelk, the cermony performed which united V.A. Hermann and Miss Florence Watson. The cermony was performed by the Rev. S.B. Tabor. (FS p. 1) +++ 1 June 1901 Death Killed By An Explosion Last Saturday afternoon (at) the Auwarter ranch, located on Otter creek about five miles north of this place, was the scene of a frightful explosion which resulted in the death of young William Auwarter, one of the owners of the place. The funeral occurred from the Congregational church Monday afteroon, Rev. Pope conducting the service. William Auwarter was about 22 years of age. He came here from Minnesota with his two brothers George and Conrad. Their mother resides in Wisconsin. (FS p. 5) +++ 8 June 1901 Death A man named John Egeland was killed at the Joseph Widdecombe ranch last Saturday. The unfortunate man was riding on a load of panels, when, they slipped, throwing him to the ground and breaking his neck. (Page 1) +++ 15 June 1901 Marriage Robert Gugler and Miss Nellie Chambers of Fish creek were married at Livingston last Tuesday. Mr. and Mrs. Gugler returned to this place Tuesday evening and departed for their home the following morning. (Page 1) Death Chas. LeDo of Deer creek died quite suddenly of meningitis at the Melville hotel last Tuesday. The young man, who was about 18, had been suffering for some time, but as he was up and about the place every day until the last attack of the disease, his case was not considered alarming. The remains were interred in the Melville Cemetery. (Page 1) Death Last week G.E. Ruud came here from the northern part of the county suffering from heart difficulty. In spite of the efforts of his physician, however, he continued to fail rapidly and died early Tuesday morning at the home of Mrs. S.B. Thurman where he was staying. The remains were interred in the local cemetery Wednesday afternoon. (Page 1) +++ 22 June 1901 Marriage Last Wednesday, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Edw. Adam on the Sweetgrass, Mr. Rudolph A. Maeridian and Miss Clara Barnett were united in marriage. The ceremony was performed by Rev. Joseph Pope of this place. (FS p. 1) +++ 6 July 1901 Marriage J.A. Anderson of Mason City, Wyoming, and Olive Benton of Bridger, Mont., were united in marriage by judge Harvey Pound last Saturday. (Page 1) +++ 20 July 1901 Marriage Frank Irvine, son of Francis Irvine of this place, was married in Scotland recently. (Page 1) +++ 3 Aug. 1901 Birth A baby boy was born to Mrs. and Mr. W.J. Hannah Thursday. (Page 1) Birth A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Muncaster in this place last Sunday. (Page 1) +++ 10 Aug. 1901 Birth A ten-pound girl was born to W.J. Knapp and wife yesterday. (Page 1) +++ 17 Aug. 1901 Marriage Last Wednesday noon, at the home of the parents of the bride in this place, Miss Mona Brown and Mr. Harry W. Powers were united in marriage by Rev. Douglas Sutton of St. Marks church. The ceremony occurred in the presence of the family and a few friends. Mr. and Mrs. Powers departed on the noon train for Helena and other western points. (Page 5) +++ 24 Aug. 1901 Marriage Mr. Louis Beley and Miss Amelia ??dd, both of this place, were united in marriage at Billings last Wednesday evening. The ceremony was performed by Judge Mann. Mr. and Mrs. Beley arrived in Bigtimber Thursday. They will make their home in this place. (Page 5) Marriage W.S. Lawrence of McLeod and Miss Bessie Shrake of Livingston were married at the Blakeslee Hotel last Tuesday by Rev. W.G. Forbis of the Methodist church. Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence will reside at McLeod. (Page 5) Death Early Thursday morning the infant son of Mr. and Mrs. John Abrahamse died of cholera infantum. The little fellow, who was the first-born and pride of his parents, had suffered almost from the first. He was just seven weeks old, having begun his short life July 4. The burial occurred yesterday afternoon, the last rites being performed by Rev. Jas. Young of the Reformed church of Wormser. (Page 4) +++ 31 Aug. 1901 Death The remains of J.S. Homer were found at the head of Big Coulee creek, some 30 miles northeast of Big Timber last Monday. All the circumstances pointed to the fact that the man had been struck and killed by lightning. Homer had parents in Buffalo, N.Y. The remains were buried at this place Tuesday morning. (FS p. 5) +++ 2 Sept. 1901 Death Mrs. Barney Hogan of McLeod died quite suddenly at her home early last Monday morning. Medical assistance was summoned from this place but she was gone before help came. The remains were brought here where the funeral occurred from the Congregational church Tuesday afternoon. Mrs. Hogan was about 44 years of age and left a husband and family of seven children. (Page 5) +++ 14 Sept. 1901 Death Floyd, the infant son of Mr. and Mrs. A.M. Dodge, died of cholera infantum last Wednesday night. The funeral occurred from the Congregational church Thursday afternoon. (Page 5) Death George Lightfoot died Sept. 2, of an accidentally self-inflicted gunshot wound at White River Basin. The remains were brought to this place yesterday afternoon. It is not known that Mr. Lightfoot had relatives anywhere in the country. (FS, p. 5) +++ 21 Sept. 1901 Birth Geo. Van Fleet is the proud father of a ten-and-a-half pound baby boy. Mother and son, who are in Bozeman, are doing well. (Page 1) Birth Last week the Leader inadvertently overlooked mentioning the baby boy born to Mrs. and Mr. Frank Webber. If the young gentleman will pardon this oversight, we will promise that it shall not occur again. (Page 1) Marriage Miss Lydia Dadie of Bozeman and photographer Wm. Morgan of this place, who were married in Bozeman last week, have taken up their permanent abode in Bigtimber. (Page 1) Death Monday evening in Bozeman, Mrs. U.G. Keller of Melville died of acute stomach trouble. The remains were brought here Tuesday morning and carried to the hall of the K.P. (Knights of Pythias) lodge. The funeral was Wednesday afternoon with the address delivered by Rev. Jos. Pope of the Congregational church. Mrs. Marcia Keller came to this place from Maine. She leaves a husband and three sisters, Mrs. J.A. Post, Mrs. Thos. Linton and Mrs. Alice Smart. (FS p. 5) +++ 28 Sept. 1901 Birth A daughter was born to Mrs. and Mr. J. Connolly last week Friday. (Page 1) Marriage Marriage license were issued last Tuesday to B.H. Lehfeldt of Merrill and Bertha Wood of Great Falls. (Page 5) Marriage Thursday evening justice of the peace H.C. Pound united Mr. Michael Whalen and Miss Nora O'Toole of Melville in marriage. (Page 5) +++ 5 Oct. 1901 Birth Mr. and Mrs. W.S. Young are the parents of a baby girl, who was born Monday. (Page 5) +++ 12 Oct. 1901 Death Mrs. N.E. Cross, mother of Dean and Leon Cross and Mrs. E.H. Cummings, died at her home on Otter creek last Thursday. She was an estimable woman and will be missed by all who knew her. (Page 5) Death The wife of J.C. (Jack) Tintinger died at her home on the Stillwater river on Tuesday. Mr. and Mrs. Tintinger had been married but for eight months, and the death is peculiarly sad. Mr. Tintinger started east on Wednesday, with the body which will be interred in the family buring grounds in the state of Iowa. (Page 5) +++ 19 Oct. 1901 Divorce Bernice Youmans, plaintiff, vs. W.E. Youmans, defendant. To set aside decree of divorce. (Page 5) Divorce Holson Owens, plaintiff, vs. Rosa Owens, defendant, divorce. (Page 5) Death Frank S. McComb died at this home in the Boulder valley, on Saturday, October 12. He was born at Hartford, Wisconsin, on the 10th day of September 1865. He was married, April 12th, 1894, to Katie Michaels, who, with three children survive him. Death was occasioned by inflamation of the bowels. The funeral took place from the Henry Nicholson residence and services were conducted by the Rev. Father H.B. Allaeys of Livingston. (FS p. 5) +++ 26 Oct. 1901 Marriage Thursday morning Mr. and Mrs. Richard Roberts arrived in Bigtimber on the early train. Mr. Roberts and Miss. L.B. Cornwell were united in marriage at the home of her parents in Winona, Minn. last Monday and departed at once for their future home in this place. (Page 5) Death Theodore Hanson, son of Mrs. Hans Rudd of this place, who was taken to the Billings hospital two weeks ago, died at that place last Sunday. At the time of his death the young man was undergoing treatment for a diseased bone in his right leg. The funeral occurred from the Congregational church Tuesday. (Page 5) +++ 9 Nov. 1901 Marriage Mr. A.L. McDonald of this place and Miss Ella M. Allen of Grinnell, Iowa, were married at the home of the parents of the bride in Grinnell on the 24th of last month. (FS p. 5) +++ 7 Dec. 1901 Death Mrs. F.E. Blakeslee, who had been suffering from a complication of diseases for some time past, died at her home at the Blakeslee Hotel Thursday. She was born in Concord, N.H. 39 years ago. Thirteen years ago she married F.E. Blakeslee. Besides her husband, she leaves Mabel, a fifteen-year-old adopted daughter. The funeral will occur from the Congregational church today. (FS p. 1) +++ 21 Dec. 1901 Birth This week C.W. Voges of McLeod, received a message from Mrs. Voges, who departed for Humansville, Mo. a short time since, presenting him with a new baby boy. The cattle on the Voges ranch are now valued at $100 per head and the hay stacks are all a thousand feet high. Beautiful flowers are in blossom in December and the sun is shining 24 hours in the day. (Page 1) Birth Mr. and Mrs. J.A. Rapue are the happy parents of a new baby girl, born last Saturday. (Page 1) +++ 28 Dec. 1901 Birth Reed Point - Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Deeney are the proud parents of a little daughter. We extend congratulations. (Page 1) Marriage At high noon on Xmas day a very pretty wedding occurred at the home of Jno. Davis, the contracting parties being Archie R. Bailey of Glasgow, Montana, and Miss Blanche Tolan, a sister of Mrs. Davis. The bride having made her home with her sister since last summer is well known in this vicinity. Mr. Bailey is an employee of the Great Northern R.R. The ceremony was performed by Rev. Jos. Pope in the presence of a few intimate friends. (Page 3) +++ 13 Dec. 1902 Death There have been many conflicting stories concerning the death of Herbert Thorley, a miner from Cowles, who was frozen to death in the mountains and brought to this place for burial last Friday. Everything indicated that Thorley, while buffeting the heavy storm, had lost his skis, which left him practically helpless. Nothing is known of his relatives. (FS p. 2) +++
