Complete obituaries and marriages may be abstrated with a note indicating there is a full story (FS) and page number following. +++ 3 Jan. 1902 Marriage Mr. Frank McCoomeas and Miss Rose Maupin, both of Greycliff, were united in marriage at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Brumfield in this place last Saturday. The ceremony was performed by Rev. Jos. Pope. The newly-wedded couple have taken up their residence at the ranch home of Mr. McCoomas. (Page 1) Marriage Miss Grace Taylor, who has been teaching in the county the past two years, departed the first of the week for Lewistown, where she was married New Years Day to Mr. Ross Giffee, formerly of this place. (Page 1) Death Marshall King Dead The entire community was shocked Tuesday forenoon to hear of the sudden death of an intestinal obstruction of Marshall King. The only relative of Mr. King in this vicinity at this time is his son J.E. King whose mother died when he was an infant. The mother and sister of the deceased, who spent a season here several years ago, are now living in Ionia, Michigan. He also leaves a brother in New York. The funeral, conducted by Rev. Jos. Pope, occurred from the residence with burial in the local cemetery. (FS p. 1) +++ 10 Jan. 1902 Marriage Andrew Benson and Miss Irene Brown, both of Bigtimber, received a marriage license from clerk of court Davis last Tuesday afternoon, and were married at the Park hotel later by Rev. V.F. Clark of the Congregational Church. The couple have returned to their home in Bigtimber. - Post (Page 1) Marriage Last Saturday afternoon John S. Hawks and Addie M. Pratton were united in marriage by Rev. J. Pope. The happy event occurred at the Congregational parsonage. Mr. Hawks has a ranch on the west fork of the Stillwater. The couple returned to Columbus Sunday morning. (FS p. 1) Marriage Last Sundaay evening at the home of Mr. and Mrs. McAuliffe in Butte, occurred a very pleasant wedding, in which Mr. W.A. Clark of this place and Miss Lizzie McWhirk of Butte were united in marriage by Rev. Tate of the Methodist church. Immediately after the marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Clark came directly to this place. (FS p. 3) +++ 25 Jan. 1902 Birth Born, to Mrs. and Mr. Fred Thompson of Bridger creek, last Wednesday, a daughter. (Page 3) +++ 15 Feb. 1902 Marriage Last Tuesday evening Mr. Earl Green and Miss Emma Forsyth arrived in town quite seriously imbued with the idea that they were about to be married. About the same time they were confronted by B.O. Forsythe, father of the prospective bride, who appeared more thoroughly imbued with the determinationation that he would not have Green for a son-in-law. Wednesday evening the young couple drove to Greycliff and took the train for Billings, followed on the next train by Mr. Forsyth. It is understood that they were married at that place Thursday afternoon. (FS p. 3) +++ 22 Feb. 1902 Marriage Monday evening, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J.E. Sheridan, occurred the marriage of Mr. Chester G. Graham and Miss Hilda SAnderson, both of this place. The ceremony was performed by Rev. Jos. Pope of the Congregational church. (FS p. 3) +++ 1 Mar. 1902 Birth The Rev. Joseph Pope and wife are happy over the addition of a baby girl to their family. (Page 3) Birth A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. L. DeVries near the Yellowstone bridge last Monday morning. (Page 3) Marriage Wednesday Mr. J.W. Bowen and Miss Mary Thomas of Clyde Park were united in marriage by justice of the peace T.E. Rice at his home in this place. (Page 3) Death Died of Heart Failure Last Sunday evening at the Blakeslee Hotel, Henry Schuenberger, one of the old time residents of the county, died suddenly of heart failure. Mr. Schuenberger was a veteran of the Civil War having served with a Pennsylvania regiment. The funeral occurred from the Congregational church Tuesday afternoon, the services being conducted by Rev. Jos. Pope. (FS p. 1) +++ 15 Mar. 1902 Birth A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Jax. Whittfield last Saturday. (Page 2) Birth Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Ross of Absarokee are the happy parents of a baby girl, born last Saturday. (Page 2) Marriage P. Gustead and Miss Mary Brown, both of Absarokee, were married in Livingston last Friday. (Page 2) +++ 22 Mar. 1902 Birth A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Julius Guglar a few days ago. (Page 2) Death Last Saturday little Henry, the 8-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. A. Whitney, who had been struggling with numonia (sic) and scarlet fever the past three weeks, finally succumbed to the complications of dieseases. He was the only remaining child of his sorrowing parents, two other little boys having previously died in a similar manner. The funeral occurred from the family residence Sunday afternoon, a large number of friends following the remains to the cemetery. (Page 2) +++ 5 Apr. 1902 Marriage At noon last Sunday in Billings, at the home of D.E. Clark, pastor of the Congregational Church, Mr. Cecil P. Harrison and Miss Zelma Guthrie, both of this place, were united in marriage, Rev. Clark performing the ceremony. (FS p. 7) +++ 12 Apr. 1902 Divorce District Court - Mary Guinan vs John Guinan. (Page 1) +++ 26 Apr. 1902 Death Dead Under The Wheels A terrible accident which occurred on the railroad five miles east of Bigtimber Thursday afternoon resulted in the almost instant death of Frank Thierfelder, a young man in the employ of the Northern Pacific company. Thierfolder, who was perhaps 25 years of age, came here from his former home in New Frankfort, Mo., about a month ago. He was a member of the Modern Woodmen, who took charge of the remains when they were brought here Thursday evening. (FS p. 1) +++ 3 May 1902 Birth A son was born the 27th of last month to Mr. and Mrs. Mat Michels of McLeod. (Page 2) Marriage Wednesday afternoon, April 30th, Miss Bessie H. Noel of Philadelphia, Penn., and Rev. A.A. Walker, pastor of the local M.E. Church South, were united in marriage at the home of the groom on Fourth Avenue. (FS p. 2) Divorce The case of Bernice Youmans against W.E. Youmans occupied the attention of the court all day Tuesday, being called early in the morning, and the jury arriving at a verdict late the same evening. In this case Mrs. Youmans was suing for the annullment of the decree of divorce which was granted to Youmans ten years ago. Mr. and Mrs. Youmans were married in Wisconsin, the home of the latter about twelve years ago. The jury found in favor of Mr. Youmans. (FS p. 1) +++ 10 May 1902 Birth A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. A.F. Murray last Sunday. (Page 2) Birth A son was born the first of the week to Mr. and Mrs. W.A. Willard of Greycliff. (Page 2) Marriage Last Saturday evening, at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Jos. Pope, Mr. Martin Crest and Miss Anna Matheson, both of this place, were quietly joined in marriage by Rev. Pope. (FS p. 7) +++ 17 May 1902 Marriage There was a pleasant wedding at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Andrews, of White Beaver, last Thursday afternoon in which Miss Josie Webb, eldest daughter of Mrs. Andrews, and Mr. H.O. Woods of the same place were united in marriage by Rev. Jos. Pope of this place. Death Killed At Merrill Siding Last Friday afternoon word was received of the death of Geo. Voaklander at Merrill, 33 miles east of this place, in a railroad accident. Late the same night the remains were brought to this place and after being embalmed they ere forwarded to his former home in Geneva, Neb. Voaklander was about 25 years of age. (FS p. 1) +++ 24 May 1902 Death The infant child of Mr. and Mrs. W.A. Willard of Greycliff died last week. (Page 2) +++ 31 May 1902 Marriage On Wednesday evening at the Fowler ranch on the main Boulder, there occurred a very pretty wedding in which Lewis A. Nelson and Miss Annie D. Fowler were the contracting parties. The marriage ceremony was performed by Rev. Jos. Pope. (FS p. 2) Death Little Olive Cavane, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A.R. Cavane, died of scarlet fever at the home of her parents last Monday evening. As reported in the Leader last week, the little girl, who had been ill two weeks, was growing better, but Monday she suffered a relapse and was soon beyond help. She was about 12 years of age. The funeral occurred Tuesday evening, and altho it could not be public on account of the disease, the remains were followed to the cemetery by a large number of sympathisizing friends. (Page 2) +++ 7 June 1902 Death The little daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Clouse was drowned at the home of her parents, six miles south of town, about noon Thursday. She was the only daughter. Ther remains were buried here yesterday evening. (FS p. 2) +++ 14 June 1902 Marriage Mr. Jacob Hoyem of Howie, who has been visiting his former home in Norway, surprised his many friends here by returning Thursday morning accompanied by a bride. Mr. and Mrs. Hoyem were united in marriage at the home of the latter about two months ago. Thursday afternoon they departed for their home on the Hoyem ranch near Howie. (Page 2) +++ 21 June 1902 Death At the family home in Absarokee, last Friday morning, occurred the death of Mrs. Lee Simonsen, who had been a sufferer from consumption of the lungs for several years past. Last year Mrs. Simonenson sought relief by an extended trip to Colorado and California and she had just returned to her home when death overtook her. Mrs. Simonsen was a lovely young woman, admired by a host of friends, and her untimely death is a sad blow to the family and community. The funeral occurred Monday. (Page 2) Death A Suicide By Morphine Tuesday morning, Josephine Tellesco, a girl of 21 who came to Big Timber two month earlier from Sheridan, Wyo., died as the result of an overdose of morphine. Before coming here she left an infant child in Thermopolis, Wyo. Her mother resides in Council Bluffs, Ia., and she also has two small half brothers there. It was impossible to ascertain the name of her mother. The remains were interred in the local cemetery Wednesday morning. (FS p. 1) +++ 5 July 1902 Death The funeral of Edward Meigs, who died at the home of his brother, Reuben Meigs, near Hunter Hot Springs, took place at the Springs last Sunday afternoon, being conducted by Rev. A.A. Walker of this place. Mr. Meigs, who was about 45 years of age, left a wife and five sons. Death Wednesday morning Mrs. J.M. Wadsworth died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Willard of Greycliff. She was over 60 years of age at the time of her death and had been a resident of this county for ten years. The funeral took place from the Congregational church, Rev. Pope conducting the services. (FS p. 2) Death Mrs. Jas. W. Warner of Deer Creek, died at the home of her parents at Lake City, Minn., early Sunday morning, June 29th. She was the wife of Jas. W. Warner and was 28 years old. Her remains were laid to rest on Tuesday, July 1st. She leaves a husband, father and mother, three brothers and a sister. (FS p. 2) Death Ed. Burris of the West Boulder was struck and killed by lightning late Thursday evening. He came to Montana from Smithville, Ohio, in 1889. He was 48 years of age and is survived by a widow and two children. (FS p. 5) +++ 12 July 1902 Death Shot In The Heart Last Monday, Richard Cosgriff of Greycliff died after being shot in the heart. The wound was self-inflicted. He leaves a wife and family of five children. The remains were interred in the Bigtimber cemetery Tuesday afternoon. (FS p. 1) +++ 19 July 1902 Marriage Chas. Rodgers of Anaconda and Mae Arbeck of Ashland, Wisc., were married at the Grand by justice H.C. Pound last Wednesday. (Page 7) Marriage Mr. SAme McGregor and Mrs. K.E. Pierce, both of Twodot, were united in marriage at the parlors of the Grand last Wednesday by Rev. G.C. Rector of the Methodist church. Mr. McGregor is one of the old residents of this part of the state and is known far and wide. Mrs. McGregor has been a resident of Big Elk and Twodot for some years past. (Page 2) Death The funeral of Andrew Norin, who committed suicide near Independence last Saturday, occurred at this place last Monday. He was about 38 years of age. It is known that he had a wife somewhere in Minnesota. (FS p. 2) +++ 26 July 1902 Birth Mr. and Mrs. S. Guthrie are the proud parents of a baby boy who arrived Wednesday. (Page 2) Death S.L. Davis Passes Away S.L. Davis, who had been suffering from a complication of ailments for several years past, died at his home one mile north of Bigtimber about midnight Wednesday night. He was nearly sixty years of age. Twenty years ago he came to this place from his home in Minnesota. The funeral took place from the Congregational church yesterday forenoon, where an appropriate address was delivered by the pastor, Rev. Jos. Pope. He left a wife and four sons. (FS p. 1) +++ 2 Aug. 1902 Marriage Last Wednesday there occurred at the Fowler ranch at McLeod in the presence of a number of the relatives and friends of the contracting parties, the marriage of John W. Fowler of McLeod and Miss Mary Ginn of Noble Co., Ohio. The ceremony was performed by Rev. Jos. Pope of the Congregational church. Mr. Fowler is one of the old residents of the McLeod district and for some time has been largely interested in the raising of good grade horses. The newly married couple grew up on adjoining farms in Ohio, where the brides parents still reside. (Page 2) +++ 16 Aug. 1902 Death Mrs. John Scarlet, oldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul L. VanCleve, died at the home of her parents near Melville Wednesday evening of diabetes. Mrs. Scarlet had been troubled with diabetes for the past year, but not seriously. Wednesday she grew suddenly worse and passed away the same evening. She was well and favorably known in the vicinity, and her death came as a shock to her friends. (Page 5) +++ 30 Aug. 1902 Birth A daughter was born at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Conrad Auwater last Sunday. (Page 2) +++ 6 Sept. 1902 Birth A son was born to Mrs. and Mr. Louie Beley Thursday. (Page 7) Death Report reached here yesterday morning of the death, Thursday, of Mrs. J.L. Davis, the aged mother of Mrs. Paul VanCleve. Mrs. Davis, who died at the VanCleve house near Melville, had been suffering for some time past. The funeral will occur this afternoon at the VanCleve home, where the remains will be interred. (Page 7) +++ 13 Sept. 1902 Birth A son was born to Mrs. and Mr. T.G. Shipton Tuesday. (Page 7) +++ 20 Sept. 1902 Divorce District Court - Clara Wellett against J.A. Wellett, divorce. (Page 1) +++ 1 Oct. 1902 Death The funeral of Oscar Heyde, the seventeen year old son of Edward Heyde of Billings who was accidentally killed at Nye last week, took place from the home of his parents last Friday afternoon. The young man had come to Montana with his parents a short time ago from their former home in Saginaw, Michigan. (FS p. 2) +++ 18 Oct. 1902 Death The funeral of Mrs. Kate Doyle took place from the Blake home last Saturday afternoon, the remains being followed to the cemetery by a large number of friends. The services were conducted by Rev. Father Blaere of Livingston. (Page 4) +++ 25 Oct. 1902 Birth A daughter was born at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Bryan of McLeod a week ago. (Page 4) Birth Mr. and Mrs. S.J. Craft of the East Boulder are the happy parents of a daughter born last Sunday. (Page 4) Death Ole Undem died quite suddenly last Monday morning at the Anderson House, where he was stopping by for the night. Sunday night he was overtaken with an attack of heart failure. A physician was called at once, but the young man was beyond help and died within four or five hours. The remains were interred in the local cemetery Tuesday. (Page 4) +++ 22 Nov. 1902 Birth A little daughter arrived at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Louie Guthrie of Greycliff one day last week. (Page 2) +++ 29 Nov. 1902 Birth Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Cosgriff of Greycliff are the happy parents of a new son. (Page 2) Death The little child of Peter Becken of Howie, who died suddenly the first of the week, was buried here Wednesday. (Page 2) Death The funeral of Mrs. Algord, who died suddenly on the Arenson ranch on Swamp creek last Monday took place here Wednesday. (Page 2) +++ 6 Dec. 1902 Birth Last week a daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. W.A. Clark of this place. (Page 2) Birth Last Sunday, at the home of Mrs. M. Whalen in this place, a son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Chas. McDonnell of American Fork. (Page 2) +++ 13 Dec. 1902 Death There have been many conflicting stories concerning the death of Herbert Thorley, a miner from Cowles, who was frozen to death in the mountains and brought to this place for burial last Friday. Nothing is known of his relatives. (FS p. 2) +++ 20 Dec. 1902 Birth A little daughter was born to Mrs. and Mr. H. Nicholson last Wednesday. (Page 2) Birth A son was born to Mrs. and Mr. Geo. Graham last Saturday. (Page 2) Death The remains of Gus Holmgren, whose death was reported in the last issue of the Leader, were interred in the local cemetery last Sunday. The funeral was conducted under the direction of the lodge of Red Men, of which Holmgren was a member. About twenty-eight members of the lodge at Columbus were in attendance at the funeral. (Page 2) +++ 27 Dec. 1902 Birth A baby boy came to brighten the home of Mr. and Mrs. F.D. Maerdian last Saturday. (Page 3) Marriage Wednesday evening Frank A. Moore of Hunters Hot Springs and Miss Laura Olson of this place were united in marriage at the Grand Hotel by Justice of the Peace T.E. Rice. (Page 3) Marriage Harry Hanly, who dissappeared from this place quite suddenly about a month ago, surprised his many friends by returning last Saturday accompanied by a bride. At the home of the parents of the bride in St. Louis, Mo., on the 17th of this month, Miss Clara Murphy and Mr. Hanly were united in marriage. They will make their future ome in this place. (Page 3) Marriage At noon on Christmas day, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. William Whitfield, occurred the marriage of their daughter, Miss Susan Whitfield, and Mr. Oscar A. Fallang. The ceremony was performed by Rev. Joseph Pope of the Congregational church. (FS p. 3)
