Jordan fell violently in love with a pretty Butte miss and it is said she reciprocated his feeling,but he rmother would not listen to the idea of the marriage. the manbrooded over his trouble unti his mind became unsettled and he became possessed of the notion that the mother had enlisted all the citizens of Butte in a conspiracy to prevent his happiness. Chief of Police Mulholland is a prominent figure in Jordan's hallucinations.
