Reid rreid21@cox.net August 10, 2008, 9:53 pm Billings Gazette March 17, 1928 Billings Gazette, March 17, 1928: As It Was In Billings 45 Years Ago Today (From the Billings Post, March 17, 1883) The Republican primary was held at the courthouse and a total of 343 votes were cast. Voters were given a period of two hours in which to register votes for delegates to the county convention. There were several tickets in the field. The winning delegates were L.H. Fenske, C.E. Barney, John Tully, J.R. Marks, G.B. Hulme, W. Swetland, J.B. Knight and C.H. Thomspson. One of the pleasing features was the friendly feeling that the Democracy showed. Having held their caucus, they lined up shoulder to shoulder with the Republicans and voted the winning ticket with unanimity. Many learned for the first time that Billings possesses a brass band. After the result of the Repbulican primary was made known the band performed some stirring airs. The most significant was “There Is One More River to Cross.” This appeared to be aimed especially at the winning delegates. The first rain of the season fell, a pleasant and refreshing shower. It came just in time to cool down the disappointed delegates to the Republican caucus. E.S. Tutt, a prominent rancher of the Sweetgrass, has bought the Danford ranch above Canyon and will reside there. (Mr. Tutt was an early-day cattleman of some prominence. The Danfords were among the earliest settlers in the Canyon creek district.) Much interest in samples of crops raised in this section has been aroused among Wisconsin farmers. These samples were obtained last fall by W.H. Holmes of Ripon Wis., from Meadow Ranch near Canyon, and Emerson and Taylor’s and Werset and Rugg’s places near Park City.
