Jimmy Danford, 21, star infielder of the Laureleaf club of the Inter-City Baseball league, was wounded fatally in action with the United States navy in the Pacific, his mother, Mrs. Laura Danford Burris of Joliet, was notified by the navy department. No details of the engagement or where Danford died were given in the message. The department informed Mrs. Burris December 23 that her son was wounded. The navy asked Mrs. Burris not to reveal Danford's rating. He enlisted in Billings and left here last August 10 for service. Before enlisting he was a chemist at the Independent Refining company, Laurel. Danford was graduated from Joliet high school in 1940, where he was outstanding in basketball. The Joliet gymnasium is lined with trophies carrying Danford's name, won in Tri-County league cage play. His mother is the only close relative. Billings Gazette, Feb 11, 1948. Funeral Ship Arrives Today. Ogden, Utah, Feb. 10 - REmains of 13 Montana men are aboard the Cardinal O'Connell, which is due to dock at San Francisco Wednesday, the American graves registration office said Tuesday. The ship carries 2,792 dead from the Pacific area, taken from a mausoleum in Hawaii and from cemeteries in Australia and Guadalcanal. The Montanas, with rank, branch of service, next of kin, include: Seaman Second Class James Howard Danford, Navy, Laura DeWitt Burris, Joliet; Billings Gazette, Feb 26, 1948 Joliet Sailor's Rites Set Saturday Military graveside committal services will be conducted at Rockvale cemetery Saturday at 2 p.m. for Seaman Second Class James Howard Danford, who died at Sidney, Australia, Dec. 29, 1942 at the age of 21. The body, being returned to the United States under the repatriation program, will arrive at Smith's funeral home in Billings early Saturday morning. Seaman Danford, son of Mrs. Laura Dewitt Burris of Joliet, died of wounds sustained in action in the south Pacific. He was born in Billings July 231, 1921, and lived Joliet until entering training Aug. 10, 1942 at San Diego. The Rev. Wallace Bristor, Episcopal missionary rector, will officiate at the graveside services. Billings Gazette, Feb 29, 1948 Military Honors Accorded Sailor, James Danford Died of Battle Wounds Graveside committal services were conducted Saturday at Rockvale cemetery for Seaman Second Class James Howard Danford, 21, of the United States navy who died Dec. 29, 1942, at Sydney, Australia, of battle wounds. The Rev. Wallace Bristor, vicar of Yellowstone missionary field of the Episcopal church officiated. Pallbearers were Thomas Hatten, Warren Hetland, Charles Spaeth, Arthur Steinmetz, Robert Wilson and Lester White. Honorary pallbearers were Robert Freund, Bill LaPrath, Jack Parker, Al Rice, Jay Spalding and Bill Wilcox. Military honors were accorded by the Veterans of Foreign Wars post of Joliet. Members of the color guard were Marian Barker, Clifford Blaylock, Otis Orthun and Dan Orthun. The rifle squad was commanded by Glenn Golden with Edward Reardon as sergeant of the guard. Rifle squad members were Art Amundson, Lowell Grewell, Albert Hail, Homer Hall, Hedio Hashisaki, Marvin Hull, Neal Regneir and Earl Zumbruna. Bugler Wilhe Koski sounded taps. Surviving is his mother, Mrs. Laura DeWitt Burris of Joliet.
