Joseph Moore Dixon US senator - was born at Snow Camp, Alamance County, North Carolina, July 31, 1867, son of Hugh W. and Flora A. (Murchison) Dixon. His first American ancestor, Thomas Dixon, was an English Quaker, who emigrated to Pennsylvania with a party headed by William Penn, and his great-great-grandfather, Simon Dixon, was the brother-in-law of Herman Husbands who led the colonists of central North Carolina in the revolt against Gov. Tryon in 1771. His father, Hugh W. Dixon, was a manufacturer of cotton machinery. The son was educated at Sylvan Academy and at Guilford College, North Carolina. Upon attaining his majority, he determined to go West, and in 1881 settled at Missoula, Montana, which became his permanent residence. In the following year he was admitted to the bar of that state, and at once entered upon an active and lucrative practice. He served as assistant prosecuting attorney of Missoula County during 1893-95, and as prosecuting attorney during 1895-97 and a member of the Montana legislature in 1900. He was a congressman-at-large from Montana during 1902- 06. Meanwhile, in 1904, he was a delegate to the Republican national convention held in Chicago. At the expiration of his second term in congress he declined a reelection, and announced his candidacy for the national senate. He was elected in January, 1907, to succeed Sen. William A. Clark, for the term expiring March 3, 1913. Senator Dixon was married March 12, 1896, to Carrie M., daughter of Frank L. Worden of Missoula, and has four daughters: Virginia, Florence, Dorothy and Mary Dixon.
