Dedicated to the U.D.C. Members who have kept alive the memory of the courage and faith of our forefathers. Dedicated to county residents who have made this edition possible. Foreword During the Centennial Commemoration of the War Between the States, 1861-1865, a committee was authorized to compile and publish a directory of all the enlistees from Alamance County, a record which will be a lasting tribute to the veterans and of great assistance to future generations. This list of veterans who gave their services is copied mostly from John Moore's Roster of N. C. Troops by Regiment and Company, giving such information as could be found. Moore's Roster makes no claim to contain all enlistees who served in the war, but it does have a great majority. Many of the Confederate records were destroyed by both the Confederates themselves and by Union troops, and many others were lost. Many regiments do not have half of the men assigned to them. Some companies are omitted entirely and some have as many as ninety men missing. We can understand this inaccuracy when we consider the lack of information and the numerous problems and conditions that the people faced during the war years. Other sources searched for information were libraries, historic sites, church cemeteries, road-side graveyards, personal letters and records, diaries, Confederate Soldiers' Pension lists and the minutes of the Confederate Camp of Alamance County. It is the hope of the Centennial Committee that this book will serve as a useful directory, but more important, that it will be helpful as a published record of the devotion of unnumbered men and women to the heroes of The War Between the States, whether they were generals, private soldiers or dedicated women. We are greatly indebted to the individuals and groups who helped collect the material and assisted in searching records—The Charles F. Fisher Chapter, Burlington, and Graham Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, the newspapers and numerous interested persons throughout Alamance County. The Committee is especially grateful for the support and cooperation of the Alamance County Commissioners: R. Homer Andrews, J. B. Long, Oscar W. Gammon, G. M. Newlin and G. C. Amick.
