Vol. XVII. GRAHAM, N. C., THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 3, 1892. NO. 39. ---An Unlawful Proceeding.--- A crowd of masqued men, supposed to number more than fifty, went to the jail in this place, Tuesday night about 2 o’clock and took therefrom J. S. Sewell, who is in jail under suspicion of knowing something about the murder of J. F. Matthews. He was carried over on the hill west of town, a rope having been placed around his neck, was thrown over a limb, and under these circumstances was asked to tell what he knew about the killing of Matthews. What he said or confessed we do not know, as the jailor was advised to keep his own counsel. The entrance to the jail was affected by one of the party, when asked who was there, saying “Holt with a pistoler.” When the door was opened several sprung in, a pistol was shoved in the face of John Nichols, son of the jailor, and Sewell demanded. The demand was acceded to. The jailor, who lives in the jail, was not allowed to come out of his room, but was assured that Sewell should suffer no harm. John Nichols was carried along with the party. Such a proceeding can not receive the appropation of the good, law-abiding citizens of Alamance county. Additional Comments: John Frank Matthews was the son of Oliver Morrisey and Elizabeth Caroline (Wilson) Matthews.
