Vol. XVII. GRAHAM, N. C., THURSDAY, OCTOBER 13, 1892. NO. 36. SHOT DOWN WHILE TRYING TO PROTECT HIS PROPERTY. Great excitement and Talk of Lynching. Last Saturday night at Burlington, Frank Matthews, a merchant, was shot down while acting in defense of his own property. It was nearly midnight, and a noise, as of some one trying to enter his store, was heard. He got out as easily as possible and came upon the person or persons trying to effect the entrance. He was armed with a shot gun and fired upon the burglars. The fire was returned almost instantly. Three shots from a revolver took effect in the body of Mr. Matthews --- one in the neck, one in the eye and another in the shoulder. The shooting was heard by parties near by who came up to see what was the matter. A horrible sight met their eyes! Frank Matthews was dead! He had lost his life at the hands of those whom he was trying to keep from feloniously carrying away his property. The news of the murder spread like wild fire and the people turned out in arms in search of the assassin. On Sunday Coroner Dr. R. A. Freeman summoned a jury and began an investigation, and up to this writing (Tuesday noon) a verdict has not been rendered. Two men have been arrested, we learn, on suspicion. Mr. Matthews was a young man, unmarried, a good, law-abiding citizen. He was well thought of and respected by all who knew him. The people of Burlington are greatly excited, and justly so; and, if the right party is caught, they are in a humor to dispose of him in short order. Additional Comments: John Frank Matthews was the son of Oliver Morrisey and Elizabeth Caroline (Wilson) Matthews.
