ALAMANCE COUNTY, NC - OBITUARIES - Isom Dennis, James and Sally Melvin ----¤¤¤¤---- We found the story of Isam in a old yellow book, written by the care taker of Bear Thicket many years ago. This was found in 1976 it was yellow with age. Isom Dennis Buried Friday, February 8, 1889 Lot 6 of 3rd row 3rd from South end of southwest drive Isom Dennis, while out with his gun, stopped to talk with his neighbor the Montgomerys and stood with the butt of his gun on the ground and the muzzle leaning against his body, where by a tussle of the dogs at his feet, the gun was set off, the charge entered his body and he lived but a few minutes. This happened the day before his burial. He leaves a wife and seven small children. He was the son-in-law of James Melvin. Isom Dennis is buried in the cemetery next to James and Sally Melvin. Bear Thicket Cemetery from Bessie Dennis Biswell, 1976 ----------------------------- James Melvin Buried June 17 1888 Mr. Melvin was born and raised in North Carolina. He came west state to state and lived here nearly a score of years. After passing the line of three score and ten he was stricken with paralysis in January last and died very suddenly on the day before his burial and after eating dinner at the table as usual. ----------------------------- Mrs Sally Melvin Buried December 14 1896 Sally Palmer was born in Alamance county North Carolina on March 30 1818. Was married to James Melvin in 1839 or thereabouts, came to Missouri with her husband and four girls in an ox wagon driven with one line. Was three months on the road, camping over Sundays. The death of her youngest girl many years ago so prayed upon her mind that she was never entirely herself again.
