Earle of Craven, John Lord Berkley, Anthony Lord Ashley Chancellor of the Exchequer, Sir Geo. Cartrett Vice Chamberline of his Majesties Howsehold, Sir Wm. Berkley Kt. and Sir Peter Colleton Barronet - The true and absolute Lords Propryators of all the Province of Carolina: To Our trusty and Welbeloved Samuell Stephens Esqr. Governor of the County of Albemarle and the Isles and Islets within 10 Leagues thereof And to our trusty and Welbeloved our Councellors and assistants to our said Governor Greeting; Whereas wee have recd. a Petition from the Grand assembly of the County of Albemarle praying that the Inhabitants of the said County may hold their lands upon the same tearmes and conditions that the Inhabitants of Virginia hold theirs and for as much as the said County doth border upon Virginia and is much of the same Nature wee are content and doe grant that the Inhabitants of the said County doe hold their Lands of us the Lords Propryators upon the same tearmes and Conditions that the Inhabitants of Virginia hould theirs; Wherefore be it knowne unto all men by these presentes that wee the said Lords and absolute Propryators of the County within the Province aforesaid have given Granted and by these presentes doe give and grant full power and Authority unto you our said Governor by and with the consent of our Councell or the Major parte thereof or to any Governor for the time being or that shall here after bee by us apointed full power and authority by and with the consent of our Councell then being or the Major parte thereof to Convey and grant such Proportions of Land as by our Instructions and concessions anexed to our Comission bearing date in Octobr. Anno Domini 1667 Wee have apointed to such persons as shall come into our said County to plant or Inhabit to bee held of us our heires and assignes upon the same tearmes and conditions that land is at this present usually granted in Virginia any thing in our Instructions and concessions aforesaid to the contrary notwithstanding; and 'We doe hereby declare and consent that the Warrant to the Surveyor for the layeing out of said land and the retorne thereon being registred and alsoe the grant of you our said Governor and Councell, or Governor and Councell that shalbe when such land is due haveing the Seale of the County affixed to it and signed by your seife and Major parte of our Councell for the time being, being registred shalbe good and effectuall in Law for the Inioyment of the said land or plantation and all the benefitts and profitts of and in the same except one haife of all Gould and Silver mines to the party to whome it is granted his heires and assignes for ever hee or they performing the conditions afor[said] Given under our hands and greate Seale of our Province this [blank].
