He was born to Queen Pool and Rufus Lackey on September 25, 1906. He worked in Knoxville, Tennessee and came home to Taylorsville on the weekends by train. He was a real sharp dresser, and was harassed and spat upon by a white heckler while waiting for the train. Lloyd and the heckler got into an altercation that resulted in the death of the neer-do-well. Lloyd escaped to Virginia where he was caught and sent back to Knoxville, TN. He was found guilty and imprisoned. But a sympathetic prison guard helped him to escape. He changed his name several times, finally settling on the name Willie Smith. He married, moved to Cincinnati, Ohio. There he bought property, raised a family under the name of Smith. He owned and ran a store there until ill health forced him to close. Lloyd was a faithful member of Greater New Hope Missionary Baptist Church in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was a respected businessman and member of the Auburn area . During all that time FBI agents used to come to Dewey’s nephew, Eubert Flower’s home in Stony Point looking for him. Dewey was preceded in death by his parents, sisters May Jolly, Clara Rissie Flowers. Brother Ray Boston and Harrison Pool, and the man who spat on him. Left to cherish his memory is his wife Evelyn. Her parents, Thomas JaPeth Smith and Sally Mae McDaniel Smith; Step Daughter Geraldine Williams, Daughters, Jackie Smith and Beverly Smith. Sons Vincent, Clarence and Larry, all of Cincinnati. One brother Arthur Boston of Taylorsville, North Carolina; Sisters Bertha Morrison and husband Jack of Durham, NC, and Mrs. Minnie Flowers, of Taylorsville, Plus a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. The funeral and interment was conducted at the Greater New Hope Missionary Baptist Church under the officiation of Rev. John H. Flynn.
