Franklin Melvin Bridges

Franklin Melvin Bridges, 85, of Amity Hill Rd., Cleveland, passed away Monday, 
March 8, 2010, at his home, after a brief illness.

He was born May 13, 1924, in Iredell County, son of the late Franklin Bridges 
and Della Shumaker Bridges Waugh. Mr. Bridges lived in Washington, DC and was 
in the grocery business before returning to Cleveland in the 1960’s. He owned 
and operated a community grocery in Cleveland for several years and was a 
retired farmer. His hobby was collecting and restoring T-model Ford Cars and 
was a member of the T-Model Association of America. Mr. Bridges was a member 
of Elmwood Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Geneva 
Little; two brothers, Wilson Bridges and Howard Bridges; a half-brother, 
Johnny Waugh; and a half-sister, Virginia Waugh.

He is survived by his wife, Gwen Alexander Bridges of the home; a step-son, 
George Muse of Statesville; two daughters, Elizabeth Bridges of Los Angeles, 
CA, and Heidi Sullivan of Laurel, MD; a brother, Bob Bridges of Statesville; 
four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be conducted 3:00 pm, Thursday, March 11, 2010, at 
Elmwood Baptist Church. Rev. Rodney McAllister will officiate. Burial will 
follow in the Oakwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00-2:30 
pm, prior to the service at the church.

Pallbearers include church members and nephews.

Memorials may be given to Hospice of Rowan County, 720 Grove Street, 
Salisbury, NC 28144 or Elmwood Baptist Church, 1052 Elmwood Rd., Statesville, 
NC 28625.
