ALLEGHANY COUNTY, NC - OBITUARIES - Mattie Lou Edwards Sholes, 31 Mar 2003 ----¤¤¤¤---- Mattie L. Sholes Mattie Lou Edwards Sholes, 83, of Johnson City, died Monday, March 31, 2003, at Northside Hospital. Mrs. Sholes was a native of Whitehead, N.C., and the daughter of the late Lonnie and Alta Blanche Caudill Edwards. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Dillard M. Sholes Jr., December 30, 1994; a son, Phillip Charles Sholes; and twin brothers, Lonnie Lee and Charlie Dale Edwards. Mrs. Sholes received her Bachelor of Science degree from Women's College at UNC-Greensboro and received her Masters of Science at VPI in Blacksburg, Va. Before becoming a dedicated homemaker, she was a professor of nutritional science at Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg, Va. She was a member of Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church, Circle #5 United Methodist Women, and often attended Westminster Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Sholes moved to Elizabethton in 1950 where her husband established his medical practice. They relocated to Johnson City in 1971. She was very active in community and school affairs. She was a past-president of the Washington County/Unicoi County Medical Auxiliary and a member of the President's Trust at ETSU. Survivors include a daughter, Susan S. Kelly, and her husband, Dr. Kenneth R. Kelly, Johnson City; five sons, Dillard M. Sholes III, and his wife, Shirlene Hammitt Sholes, Johnson City, Dr. Thomas E. Sholes, and his wife, Diane Swingle Sholes, Gainesville, Ga., Dr. Christopher W. Sholes, and his wife, Laura Miller Sholes, Johnson City, Keith Edward Sholes, and his wife, Laura McCastlain Sholes, Little Rock, Ark., and Dr. William M. Sholes, New Orleans, La. Fifteen grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive. SHOLES -- The Celebration of Life Service for Mattie Lou Edwards Sholes, 83, of Johnson City, who died Monday, March 31, 2003, will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 2, at Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ben Konopa, Grace Presbyterian Church, Ft. Payne, Ala., and the Rev. David Lovelace officiating. Music will be under the direction of Mrs. Jane LaPella. A private family graveside and interment service will be held at Monte Vista Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Keith W. Sholes, Thomas C. Sholes, Taylor Sholes, Tipton D. Sholes, Adam E. Sholes, Phillip Sholes, Kenneth R. Sholes, Patrick Kelly and Michael B. Sholes. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Sam Thatcher, Julian Caudill, Dr. Jim Richter, Dr. Bud McCreary, Dr. Scott Gentry, Dr. Wesley Pitts, Dr. C.E. Goulding Jr., Dr. C.E. Goulding III, Dr. William Cone, Dr. Frederick Jelovsek, Dr. Martin Olsen, Dr. Paul Stanton, Dr. Martin Pittman and Dr. David Walters. The family will receive friends from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 1, in the Sunset Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Services. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Dillard M. Sholes Jr., M.D. Lectureship at ETSU, c/o ETSU Foundation, Box 70721, Johnson City, TN 37614. Mrs. Sholes was a gardener and a nature lover, as well as a supporter of the local arts and cultural events.
