History: REVERSE: Mecklenburg County North Carolina was formed from Anson County in 1763 – Anson had been cut from Bladen County in 1750. Bladen had been cut from New Hanover in 1734. New Hanover was cut from Craven in 1729. Craven was founded in 1712 as a rename of the Archdale Precinct of Bath County. Bath was one of the original 1696 divisions. FORWARD: Mecklenburg became a county in 1763. The city of Charlotte was founded in 1768 as Charlotte Town. Tryon County was cut from Mecklenburg in 1769 (parts of Tryon became Rutherford and Lincoln Counties in 1779 and Cleveland County was cut from Rutherford and Lincoln in 1841. Gaston was cut from Lincoln in 1846.) Cabarrus County was cut from Mecklenburg in 1792. Union County was cut from parts of Anson and Mecklenburg in 1842. So, the area that is now Mecklenburg County North Carolina was formerly part of... 1750 - 1763 Anson 1734 - 1750 Bladen 1729 - 1734 New Hanover 1712 - 1729 Craven 1696 - 1712 Bath before 1696 – Colonial Carolina Also, some areas that were previously called Mecklenburg County are now known as others... Tryon County before 1769 including areas of Rutherford, Lincoln, Cleveland, and Gaston which were all once Mecklenburg County before 1769. Cabarrus County before 1792 which had been Mecklenburg and earlier Anson County. Union County in 1842 which had been parts of Meckenburg and Anson and earlier Anson. Before the 1769 division, Mecklenburg County was a massive area that ranged along the Carolina border from the Piedmont to the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains. To compound the matter even more, North and South Carolina each claimed parts of what was then Tryon County, especially in the area of Cleveland/Rutherford Counties. Randall Holt the emigrant was born about 1607 in Prestburry England and died about 1642 in Surry County Virginia. He was the son of Randall Holt and Elizabeth Potte and husband of Mary Bailey (dau of John Bailey) who was born about 1609 in Prestburry England. Their children include: William Holt, Jane Holt, Michael Holt, Randall Holt, and John Holt. Randall reportedly came to American (Jamestowne Colony) in 1620 aboard the ship George as a 13 year old indentured servant to Dr. John Potts. He was released from his indenture in 1625. Major Randall Holt was born about 1629 in Surry County Virginia and died before 2 December 1679 in Surry County Virginia. He married Elizabeth Hansford (dau of Col. John Hansford and Elizabeth) before Oct 1663. Elizabeth was born after 1645 in York County Virgnia and died before 3 May 1709 in Surry County Virginia. Their children include: John Holt, Thomas Holt, William Holt, Jane Holt, Lucy Holt, and Mary Elizabeth Holt. Randall inherited the whole of Hogg Island in addition to land he later patented exceeding 1000 acres. William Holt was born about 1664 and died before 18 May 1726. He married Elizabeth Seward (dau of William Seward and Ann Clinch) before 1692. Elizabeth was born about 1670 and died before 21 September 1737. Children of William and Elizabeth include: Thomas Holt, William Holt, Charles Holt, Mary Holt, Sarah Holt, Ann Holt, Elizabeth Holt, and Tahpenes Holt. Thomas Holt was born about 1700 at Hogg Island Virginia and died in about 1788 at SouthHampton County Virginia. His wife was Virginia Ann Newsom (dau of Thomas and Elizabeth Crawford Newsom) who was born about 1704 in SouthHampton County Virginia. They were married in about 1727 – children include Charles Holt, Amey Holt, Thomas Holt, Jesse Holt, Sarah Holt, Martha Holt, and Frederick Holt. Amey Holt was born about 14 August 1720 in Surry County Virginia (dau of Thomas Holt and Virginia Ann Newsom) and died after 1791 in Southhampton County Virginia [Randall Holt line]. She married James Martin (son of William Martin and Virginia ?) who was born 18 May 1723 in Virginia and died November 1791 in Southhampton County Virginia. Amey’s greatgrandmother was Elizabeth Hansford, sister of Colonel Thomas Hansford of Bacon’s Rebellion. Amey’s brother Thomas (1728 – after 1793) migrated to Halifax County North Carolina with his wife Ann Arrington. Children of Thomas and Ann include Joseph, Thomas, Patience, Rebecca, James, Arrington, Henry, and William. James (1754 – 1837) m. Lydia Read and migrated to Tennessee from North Carolina. I have no further data on Ameys’ other siblings Charles (1725-1773), Jesse (1730 – 1776), Sarah (1734 - ), Martha (1736 - ), and Frederick (1740 – 1792) but would like to add those lines to my files. James and Amey had at least two children – Kinchen Martin (1762-1841) and Lucy Martin (James’ sister was also a Lucy Martin). Kinchen Martin was born in Southhampton County Virginia on 6 January 1762, served in the American Revolution, and died 14 June 1841 in Anson County North Carolina. In 1784 he married Chloe Hough (dau of Hezekiah Hough and Mary Ingram) in Northhampton County North Carolina.
