Written: February 10, 1779

	PHILEMON THOMAS to John Cole. “This indenture made this 10th day of 
February, 1779, between PHILEMON THOMAS and ELIZABETH THOMAS, his wife, of the 
State of North Carolina and Anson County, planters, of the one part, and John 
Cole of the same state and county, of the other part;

	“Witnesseth that the PHILEMON THOMAS and ELIZABETH THOMAS, his wife, 
for and in consideration of the sum of 500 pounds lawful money of the state of 
North Carolina to us in hand paid by the said John Cole before the ensealing 
and delivery of these presents, the receipt we acknowledged therefore, have 
bargained, sold, aliened, en___ed and confirmed, and by these presents doth 
bargain, sell, alien, en___, and confirm unto the said John Cole, his heirs, 
executors, administrators and assigns forever:

	“All of that tract of land containing 263 acres of land lying and being 
in the County of Anson and state aforesaid, lying on Jones Branch, lower side 
of Hitchcock Creek, beginning at a blackjack by Robert Thomas’s line about 100 
yards from the upper side of said branch and running thence north 80 east 29 
chains to a stake by a pine in or near John Hicks or Murphy’s line, thence 
south 10 east 69 chains and 90 links to a small white oak thence 80 west 40 
chains to a stake among 3 pine trees, thence north 10 west 54 chains and 90 
links, then north 80 east 11 chains, thence direct to he beginning, containing 
263 acres granted by patent to the said Philemon dated May the 24th day of
