From North Carolina State Archives, Microfilm C.082.40001, Richmond County Record of Deeds, Vol. B, page 84:
Written: June 18, 1785

“This indenture made this 18th day of June, in the year 1785, between PHILEMON 
THOMAS and ELIZABETH THOMAS, his wife, of the one part, and John Cole of the 
state of North Carolina of the other part;”

	“Witnesseth that the said PHILEMON THOMAS and ELIZABETH, his wife, for 
and in consideration of the sum of 500 pounds specie to them in hand paid by 
the said John Cole at or before the ensealing and delivery hereof, the receipt 
whereof is hereby acknowledged, have bargained, sold, aliened, en___ed and 
confirmed, and by these presents do bargain, sell alien, en___ and confirm unto 
the said John Cole, his heirs and assigns forever:

“A certain tract of land lying and being in the County of Richmond, north east 
of Pedee on the east side of Hitchcock Creek, beginning at a forked pine, his 
old corner and runs with his line south 30 west 40 chains to Hitchcock Creek, 
then up the various courses of the creek to a white oak, on a steep hillside 
about 40 yards from the bank on an old line, then south 48 east 11 chains to 
the beginning, containing 18 acres of land granted by patent unto the said 
PHILEMON THOMAS, bearing date the 3rd day of September in the year 1779, to 
have and to hold the above grant of 18 acres, etc. Signed PHILEMON THOMAS, 
ELIZABETH THOMAS.”
