All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/nc/ncfiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Kermit Smith kermit61@bellsouth.net October 3, 2009, 10:57 am To his Exelency Richard Caswell Governor in Cheaf and Over the State of North Carolina & to the Honorable house of Sennet & To the Honorable house of Commons now Convened at Newborn the Humble address of JOHN SMITH Shoes that Where as I have stood as Presoner of War at Deferant place's in America& last of all at Fredrick Town and By Order of the Continental Congress I obtaind a perole from thence to my Residantal place in Anson County in said State of North Carolina and there to remain on my Good Behavior During this present War and soon after my Return home I went before Benj Baird one of the States Justes of the Peace for Anson County & being Sensable of my Crime against America I made a recantation and with joy took the Oath presented by the Honourable Congress for those who had taken up arms against America & also at Anson Court last I took the Oath to this State Tho not withstanding I then at the Worshipfull Courts Request Executed a Bond for my Appearance before the Honourable Members of the Present Assembly and now it PLease Your Honours through the impare of my helth Rendered me unable to Appear according to said Bond and as it is Act of God and not my Choice your Petitioner Humbely Prays ye Honours that the Bond may not be forfeited as I will at all times B true Alegince according to the Independent State of America, and I am Duty Bound shall Ever Pray &C November 4 1777 JOHN SMITH (Reverse of paper) Petition of JOHN SMITH of Anson County November 4th 1777 lie over for Consideration We the subscribers being Neighbours to the within JOHN SMITH & at this time he is in a low state of helth so that to a appearance he is unable to travel any far Distance Certified by us.
