Willis' Company under command of Col. John Branch. His first enlistment was as a substitute for his father, who had been drafted. During this stint he was marched to Lewisburg in Franklin and then under Col. Seawell he marched to Ramsey's Mill where his company joined Gates Army in South Carolina. He was sent to guard the Pee Dee River and had several skirmished with Tories. He was again drafted in the same year and served in the militia in Capt. Jones' Company under command of Col. Branch. He volunteer a third term in Capt. Hall's Company under the command of Col. William Rose during which he guarded stores of arms and wagons in South Carolina. CARPENTER was a private. He was born in Halifax in 1764. After the war he moved first to Orange County and then to Anson County. He applied for pension on Oct. 9, 1832 at the age of 68. During this court appearance his brother, WILLIAM CARPENTER, attested to his brother's service in the Revolutionary War. He recalled that he, WILLIAM, was nine years old at the time.
