German C.G. german@jarman.net ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Applications of William Jarman and widow Mary (Hamer) Jarman with affidavits of Charles Hicks and Charles Hinson(from National Archives pension application file W4003 [North Carolina]) For the purpose of obtaining the benefit of the Act entitled an Act for the relief of certain surviving Officers and Soldiers of the Army of the revolution approved on the 15th May 1828 I William Jarman of the County of Anson in the state of North Carolina do hereby declare that I enlisted in the Continental line of the Army of the revolution for and during the War and continued in its service untill its termination at which period I was a private in Captain William Barrott in the Third regiment of Light Dragoons commanded by Colonel William Washington of the Continental line and I do also declare that I afterwards received certificates for the reward of eighty dollars to which I was entitled under a resolution of Congress payed the 15th of May 1778 and I further declare that I was not on the fifteenth day of May on the Pension list of the United States. Witness my hand this 16th day of October in the year 1828 Witness his Wm. Johnson J.P. Wm X Jarman mark State of North Carolina On this the 13th day January 1845 personally appeared before the justices of the County Court of Anson held at Wazdesboro on the 2nd Mondy in Janry 1846. Mary Jarman a resident of the County a fore said, aged eighty one years who being first duly sworn according to law, doth on her oath make the following declaration, in order to obtain the benefit of the provision made by the act of Congress passed the 17th June 1844 granting pensions to certain widows states that her first name was Mary Hamer and that she was born in the month of May 1764 and that she was joined in wed lock to William Jarman by John Aulds Esq a justice of the peace for the county of Anson, that their family record has been torn out of their Bible and lost butr to the best of her recolloection their marriage took place in October in the year 1785 that she is the widow of the said William Jarman who was a draggoon in the Virginia line of the army of the revolution that her husband the a fore said William Jarman died on the 16th day May 1845 She further would ask leaf to refer the War department to records or documents upon which the a fore said William Jarman drew his pension for the legality of her claim. that she was not married to him prior to his leaving the service of the army, but their marriage took place previous to the 1st of January 1794 Anno Domini to wit as the time above stated. She further declareth that they have lived together as man and wife in the County of Anson from their marriage until the day of her Husbands death. Sworn and Subscribed to on the day and year above written in open Court her Mary \\ Jarman mark State of North Carolina} Personally appeared before me William Anson County } Hammond One of the Acting Justices of the peace in and for the County afore Said Charles Hicks a Citizen of the Said County who being first duly Sworn according to Law doth on his Oath make the following Declaration that according to the Record of his Father's Bible he was born October (1769) Seventeen Hundred and Sixty Nine and being called on to know or State If he knew of the legal marriage of William German and Mary Hamer doth on his oath State that he was acquainted with Mary Hamer from a Small Boy and that he became acquainted with the Said William German about One year or between One and Two years after the Close of the Revolutionary War at which time he was informed that the afore Said Willaim German and Mary Hamer were going to marry and that the Said Charles Hicks states at that time he was a Citizen of Chesterfield District SoCa about twenty five mile from the neighborhood where the parties lived and that his Relations were living in Said neighborhood and was afterwards informed that they were married and that in the Course of Four or Five Years from his first acquaintance with the Said William German he (Charles Hicks) removed to Anson County and has been a Citizen of Said County ever Since. and that he has been to the Home of Said William German and knew that they had been living together as man and wife ever Since up to the present death of the Said William German and has never heard their marriage the first time doubted and that he has known Mary German the wif or widow of the late William German for a great many Years and that she has sustained a good and righteous Character from Our first acquaintance Sworn to and Subscribed on the 24th of Sept Anno Domini 1845 Charles Hicks State of North Carolina } Personally appeared before me Wm Allen one of Anson County } the acting Justices of the Peace for said County Charles Hinson Esq a resident of said County and after being duly sworn according to Law states as follows That he was born as he was informed in Marlbough District SoCa and that his parents removed to Anson County when he was three or four weeks old that he is now near eighty three years old that he always lived within a few miles of the place he now lives That he was well acquainted with Wm Jarman when he was a young man and continued to be to the death of said Jarman that he was also well acquainted with one Mary Hamer whose mother lived within two or three miles of where he lived and at a certain time about eighteen months or two years after peace was made report said that the said Wm Jarman & Mary Hamer entermarried that he was not at their wedding but is confident they were married several years before he was him self and that he has a family record of his own marriage that he was married Oct. 9th 1788 and that he was married by John Aulds Esq a Justice of the Peace who was the only Justice of the Peace in the neighborhood where we lived That he has known Wm Jarman and his wife Mary living as man and wife ever sence to the death of the said Wm Jarman and that said Wm Jarman was a pensioner of the United States for his service in the army of the Revolution Subscribed to this 11th day of March 1846 Charles Hinson State of North Carolina } on this 4th day of September 1848 personally Anson County } appeared before Augustin Shephard one of the acting Justices of the Peace in and for the County of Anson, Mary Jarman a resident of North Carolina in the County of Anson aged about Eighty Four Years When being first duly Sworn according to Law doth on her Oath make the following Declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the provision made by the act of Congress passed on the 2nd February 1848 Granting pensions to widows of persons who served during the Revolutionary war, that she is the widow of Wm Jarman who was a private dragoon in the regular service of the Virginia line and that he was pensioner for many years untilhis death and died as a resident of Anson County North Carolina, on the 16th day of May 1845 and that his pension was at the rate of one Hundred Dollars per annum and that she received a pension under the act of 17th June 1844 commencing on 16th May 1845 and ending on the 4th March 1848 at the rate of one Hundred Dollars per annum, That she further Declares she is Still the widow of the Said William Jarman decd. her Mary \\ Jarman mark
