Anson Co. NC - John Keen Revolutonary War Pension, 1843 ~~~~~~~~~~ Application of Elizabeth Keen, widow of John Keen Source: National Archives pension application file W 7959 [North Carolina]) State of NC, Anson County On this day of June 1844 personally appeared before me William Allen a Justice of the Peace for the County, Elizabeth Keen a resident of North Carolina and this county aforesaid age 80 years. She being first duly sworn makes the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the Revision made by the Act of July 7 1838 and Act 23 Aug. 1842 granting half pay and pension to certain widows. That she is a widow of John Keen who was a Pvt. during the War of the Revolution in the NC Militia. He served one tour of duty as a substitute for Joshua Lamb, a tour of 3 months and he was afterwards drafted for 6 months and served his time out. I knew John Keen at the time of this service before we were married, the date not recollected. She further allowed that she was married to the said John Keen in the month of April 1786 in the county of Johnston, state of NC by Evert Pirce a Justice of Peace and that her husband John Keen died Aug. 17 1824. And she is yet a widow and can not by reason of bodily infirmity attend at the court house. She would have applied earlier but didnt know she could get one and am willing to accept such pension as the Dept. will allow and be quite thankful. Sworn and subscribed the date and date above signed William Allen Elizabeth X Keen (her mark) State of NC Anson Co., Superior Court August term 1850 It was there made appear to the satisfaction of said court that Elizabeth Keen widow of John Keen died on the 16 day of June 1845 leaving George Keen, Betsy Keen, Mourning Keen, Kezzia Keen, Litha Keen and Sarah Keen children of the above marriage of John and Elizabeth Keen. Caldwell, JP Elizabeth Keen, widow of John Keen who was a Pvt in the Rev. for 9 months Inscribed on the Rolls at $30.00 per annum to commence 4th day of March 1843 end 16 June 1845 when she died Certificate of Pension issued 31st day of August 1850 and sent to Wm. E. Deberry House of Rep. Recorded Book A Volume 2 page 156 payable to her only surviving children to wit: George Keen, Betsy Keen, Mourning Keen, Kezzia Keen. Letha Keen, Sarah Keen. Phebe Boyett daughter of Elizabeth Boyett was born April 13, 1783 Molly Keen daughter of John and Elizabeth Keen was born 23 January 1787 George Keen son of John and Elizabeth Keen was born Oct. 20,1789 Elizabeth Keen daughter of John and Elizabeth Keen was born April 1792 ___nerpt Keen daughter of John and Elizabeth Keen born June 18,1794 Mourning Keen daughter of John and Elizabeth Keen was born January 5 1798 [Kesiah born March 14, 1799 Pashie born September 2, 1801] Other names given as children but no birth dates were Ferbia, Elisha, Letha and Sally/Sarah. Surviving in Anson Co. NC in 1851 were: George, Betsy, Mourning, Letha, Kezzia, and Sally. In 1845 John's sister Nancy age 86 and husband James Horn age 89 and John's sister Ailcy Keen age 80 were all living in Anson Co.
