On motion, AUGUSTUS SHEPHERD was called to the Chair, and R. T. BARNETT and W.M. HAMMOND appointed Secretaries. On motion, a committee consisting of S.W. COLE, DAVID CARPENTER, HARVEY T. KNOTTS, WILLIAM M. HAMMOND, and WM. H. KIRBY was selected to draft resolutions. The Committee reported the following: Resolved, That this meeting has unbounded confidence in the patriotism and nationality of the present Federal Administration. Resolved, That His Excellency, Gov. ELLIS, has discharged his duties so as to meet with our applause, and the delegates to the State Convention by this meeting appointed are hereby requested to cast their votes for him as our first choice for Governor of the State. Resolved, That events are occurring every day, as the history of our country shows, which convince us that the Democratic party is the only one that has the will if not the ability to do justice to the South by a devotion to its Constitutional rights: -- that at the North it stands alone as a party of numbers sufficient to accomplish anything in its effort to resist the dangerous heresies and unpatriotic designs of black Republicanism; that therefore, in the opinion of this meeting, it is the duty of every true Southern man and every patriot to forget his prejudices and act with it in its efforts to defeat the enemies of the Constitution in its efforts to defeat the enemies of the Constitution and the rights of the States, since it must be clear to every intelligent man that the contest in the next Presidential election will be between the Democratic and black Republican parties. Resolved, That having entire confidence in the ability, integrity and patriotism of JAMES W. OSBORNE, we recommend him as a suitable person on the Democratic Ticket as Elector for the District. The resolutions were then read seratim and unanimously adopted. On motion it was: Resolved, That 20 Delegates be appointed to attend the District Convention and that the same persons attend the State Convention in the same capacity, which meets on the 8th of March and for reason it was further: Resolved, That the meeting recommend on the 6th day of March and the town of Charlotte as the proper time and place for holding said District Convention.
