   WILLIAM C. FLAKE, ESQ., departed this life on the 4th inst., at 8 o'clock 
a.m., aged 48 years, six months and 21 days. He died of dysentary, after an 
illness of ten days of much suffering.
   The subject of this obituary notice was born in Anson County, N. C., where 
he was educated, lived and died. He was well and favorably known by his 
numerous friends, not only in his resident county, but in the adjacent 
counties. The writer was acquainted with the deceased for four years, and two 
years directly preceding his demise, was his nearest neighbor and almost daily 
associate, consequently he was intimately known and endeared to him. As a 
husband, he was fond and affectionate, as a father, kind and indulgent, as a 
master, he was merciful and forbearing, and as a citizen useful and 
instructive, and during his whole life he maintained and preserved throughout, 
a character for honesty and virtue, for integrity and firmenss. He devoted 
many years of his life to the business of teaching school, and by so doing 
disseminated the seed of knowledge, morality, usefulness, in educating his own 
children, neighbors, and friends in various portions of his native county. As 
a Justice of the Peace he was ready and accurate. He was not aspiring, but 
competant, and would have filled almost any office within the gift of the 
people of Anson with ability and credit to himself and country: but "in the 
midst" of his "days" was taken away to that "bourne from whence no traveller 
returns." He has left an affectionate and afflicted wife and eight children, 
together with many relations and friends to condole his departure.
