C. June 27th, 1861 Brother Browne: I came to the post office this morning and found a young man about starting to Wadesboro, and got him to wait a moment till I could drop you these lines to inform you of the death of our beloved brother, J. F. HOUGH. He was killled late on Monday evening last. before the store of HEYDEN & WINCHESTER, by a pistol ball from the hand of JAMES RICHARDS, the keeper of one of the hotels and whisky shops of that place. There had been a great riot in town, and parhaps a half a dozen fights, or more, within 15. BROTHER HOUGH had nothing to do in the affair, and was not in the crowd. The row took place at RICHARD'S Hotel and whisky shop. After a space of half an hour, RICHARDS came to the store of HEYDEN & WINCHESTER, where BROTHER HOUGH, ESQUIRE HEYDEN, GEN. WALKUP and others were seated. It is believed that BROTHER HOUGH received the ball intended for HEYDEN. An attempt was made to kill RICHARDS, but the officers were successful in getting him to jail. He is safe at the dungeon at this times, but such is the excitement, indignation and wrath in the whole community, it is believed he will be taken out of jail by violence and hung. I have hardly ever seen more excitement in a community under any circumstances. BROTHER HOUGH was an entirely innocent man -- had not said a word up to the time of his recieving the ball, that is, after RICHARDS came to the place where he was. The ball entered the face on the left side, near the nose, about half way between the left wing of the nose and the eye, passed throuogh the superior maxilmary bone, divided the internal carotid artery and injured the spinal column at the base of the skull, which instantly destroyed all motion and sensation, so he expired without moving or feeling pain. I have not time to give you a full account. Funeral of BROTHER HOUGH, yesterday, at 11 o'clock, after which he was interred. A very large collection of people on the occasion. Remember in your prayers the widow and fatherless. Yours in Christ B. G.
